Thursday, December 2nd finds the Chicago Bulls playing the New York Knicks in their third meeting this season. The teams have split the two meetings.
Chicago last played Monday defeating the Hornets 133-119 while the Knicks played the Nets on Tuesday losing a heartbreaker 110-112 in clutch time.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Knicks taking two of the three contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Knicks in 125 of their 237 matches.
Chicago Bulls
The Ball brothers take their competitions seriously especially against each other and with the Monday victory, big brother Lonzo has the edge winning two of the three times they’ve faced each other in the pros.
Lonzo scored 16 points hitting four of his five 3-pointers adding a rebound, eight assists, a steal, and a block. Big man Nikola Vucevic led the way for the Bulls with a double-double featuring 30 points, 14 rebounds plus five assists, and two blocks.
Each of the core players contributed to the win with DeMar DeRozan registering 28 points, five rebounds, six assists, and a steal. Zach LaVine provided 25 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
Alex Caruso offered 14 points, three rebounds, seven assists, and a block in his reserve role.
The Bulls rank ninth offensively (110.0) and seventh defensively (105.4).
Patrick Williams (wrist) is out indefinitely.
New York Knicks
When Kemba Walker signed on with his hometown Knicks the Mecca was thrilled, At the time it raised red flags (for me) that Sam Presti didn’t elect to try to flip the veteran point guard as he’d done so many times prior with other veterans.
So when the report surfaced he was being taken out of the starting lineup and possibly the rotation altogether it wasn’t that surprising. With the league moving toward lengthier guards and reliant on players who could defend multiple positions the writing was on the wall.
Although Walker can score his numerous knee injuries have rendered him less effective defensively and with Tom Thibodeau at the helm, he was going to have a hard time staying in the rotation especially with the Knicks struggling.
On Tuesday, the Knicks went with Alec Burks in the starting role in the showdown versus the Nets. Burks delivered leading the team in scoring with 25 points plus contributed five rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block.
Julius Randle offered 24 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, and two steals. Several teams lately have complained about the whistle when playing the Nets and Randle picked up a tech for doing the same. He was told he’s stronger so he doesn’t get the calls (huh?).
In the end, the Nets took 25 free throws to the Knicks 12 and yet another team left the court feeling Brooklyn is getting special treatment.
Derrick Rose was back after missing three games and flirted with a double-double of 16 points and nine assists, plus five rebounds. Evan Fournier (13) and Immanuel Quickly (12) were the other double-figure scorers.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Knicks are 7-3 in their last 10 head to head contests

- Over Under is 3-7 in the team’s last 10 head to head matchups
- The Bulls are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games on the road.
- The total has gone under in 9 of New York’s last 11 games.

Using Alek Burks in the starting rotation is working — so far. But in this matchup, the Knicks need to counter the Bulls trio of DeRozan, LaVine, and Ball plus Caruso off the bench. That factor has me leaning toward the Bulls.
