Monday November 5 finds the Chicago Bulls meeting up vs. their hosts the New York Knicks. Both squads enter following losses with the Bulls on a four game losing turn and the Knicks having lost to Washington and two of their past three games.
Last season, the Bulls won three of the four meetings between the squads. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Knicks in 121 of their 226 matches.
Despite their record the young Bulls offer an exciting brand of basketball and hope for future success. Zach LaVine has fully recovered from his ACL tear and is on a scoring terror averaging 26.6 points per game.
Copious injuries have sidelined several core Bulls contributors, however it’s afforded LaVine and rookie Wendell Carter Jr. to showcase their talents. Still, the Bulls struggle in key categories on both sides of the hardwood.
Although Chicago are one of the most efficient perimeter scoring teams (5th) they rank 20th offensively and 23rd in points per game.
Likewise, Chicago struggle on the glass ranking 27th and rank 29th defensively.
Bobby Portis (sprained MCL, right knee) is expected to miss between four and six weeks. Kris Dunn (sprained left MCL) out til December. Denzel Valentine(left ankle sprain) and Lauri Markkanen (right lateral elbow sprain) will also be out til mid to late November respectively.
New York Knicks
The Mecca has been waiting for what seems like forever to be among the NBA elite and may only have to wait one more season given the history and appeal of the storied franchise. Couple that with a bevy of talented youthful assets and opening salary cap room this offseason and New York could make a huge leap next season.
For the moment though, the Knicks faithful are best to develop their young prospects with a view to determining who could become a piece of their core moving forward.
Kristaps Porzingis and Kevin Knox are definitely among those puzzle pieces, but many other youngsters offer intriguing upsides. Two surprise standouts are Damyean Dotson and Allonzo Trier who along with Ron Baker offer substance and depth when the Knicks begin to add free agents.
For now however, New York rank 22nd offensively and 16th defensively and will spend the season developing their systems with a view toward the future.
Tim Hardaway Jr. (lower-back injury) is questionable for the Bulls match. Rookie Kevin Knox (sprained left ankle) is expected out until mid November. Courtney Lee (neck spasms) is uncertain of a return date as he joins Kristaps Porzingis (torn left ACL) who is expected out until February.
