Wednesday, November 23rd the Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks will play the first of four scheduled meetings this season. The Bulls will host on December 28th and February 16th while Milwaukee will host the final contest on April 5th.
Both teams last played Monday with the Bulls defeating the Celtics 121-107 while the Bucks beat the Blazers 119-111.
The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Bucks in 132 of their 259 matches. Last season the clubs played four times with the Bucks sweeping the regular season series.
Chicago Bulls
Players typically have a team they perform well against and in DeMar DeRozan’s case the Celtics rank at the top of his list. Whether he was with the Raptors, Spurs, or Bulls he’s always delivered against the Bean Town crew.
I cited that fact in the Celts- Bulls preview suggesting bettors take the points and the Bulls. Sure enough, DeRozan led his squad with 28 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and most importantly the victory.
Chicago is struggling this season seeded 11th currently but they hold the distinction of being one of two teams (Cleveland) who’ve defeated the Celtics. Both the Cavs’ wins required overtime but the Bulls’ wins were by 18 and 14 points.
Recalling last season when Chicago struggled against the East top seeds their lone victory (out of 15 games) was versus the Celtics.
The Bulls’ initial schedule has featured more of the top-tier teams so they might be able to turn this around but through 17 games there are clearly some major weaknesses.
Chicago scores 111.1 points per game (19th/tied Lakers) while shooting 47.1% from the field (11th/tied 76ers) and 36.1% from deep (13th). Defensively, they allow 111.3 points per game (12th) with opponents shooting 47.5% from the field (22nd) and 38.5% from deep (28th).
Lonzo Ball (knee) remains out indefinitely.
Milwaukee Bucks
Losing in Philly and the ensuing ‘laddergate’ didn’t seem to have much carryover for the Bucks other than they bounced back with a victory in the next match.
Clearly, the Bucks’ offense isn’t at full speed given Khris Middleton and Pat Connaughton’s absences. The latter made his season debut versus the Blazers. He was rusty, needing reps and to find his rhythm but will undoubtedly improve Milwaukee’s floor spacing and 3-point shooting.
So take the Bucks’ offensive stats with a grain of salt because Middleton will make an even great impact once he’s back. Through 16 games, Milwaukee averages 111.4 points per game (17th) while shooting 44.9% from the field (26th), and 34.1% from the perimeter (22nd).
In contrast, they shine defensively, holding opponents to the fourth-fewest points per game (106.9) while limiting their efficiency with opponents shooting 44.5 percent from the field (2nd) and 35.3 percent from the perimeter (12th).
Wesley Matthews (hamstring) is questionable for Wednesday. Khris Middleton (wrist) and Joe Ingles (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Bulls are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Bucks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Bulls are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games against Milwaukee.
- The Bucks are 9-1 SU in their last 10 games at home.
Free Chicago Bulls vs. Milwaukee Bucks NBA Prediction:
While the Bulls don’t have a great answer to defend Antetokounmpo the key matchup may be Nikola Vucevic versus Brook Lopez who has been on fire from deep of late (11 of 19).
| Rk | Player | Season | FGA | FG% | 3PA | 3P% | 2P% | ORB | DRB | TRB | AST | STL | BLK | PTS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brook Lopez | 2022-23 | 12.2 | .497 | 6.3 | .390 | .611 | 1.9 | 4.0 | 5.9 | 1.1 | 0.7 | 2.8 | 16.2 |
| 2 | Nikola Vučević | 2022-23 | 12.5 | .476 | 4.1 | .377 | .524 | 2.5 | 9.2 | 11.8 | 3.1 | 0.3 | 0.8 | 15.5 |
A direct comparison is a bit surprising given the presumption that Vucevic is considered one of the Bulls’ big three while Lopez might fall fourth or fifth in the shot pecking order.
Granted, he’s getting more looks with Middleton out but it was surprising to learn he takes more 3-pointers per game than Vucevic and their field-goal attempts are virtually the same. Vuc is much more active on the glass but the Bucks lead the league in rebounding via strong team rebounding.
A few other key stats — the Bulls are 2-5 on the road versus the Bucks’ 9-1 home record however Milwaukee is 3-4 in their last seven matches (3 road losses).
Ultimately, I like the Bucks to win and while the seven-point spread feels a bit heavy given their offensive struggles, I’m rolling the dice on Giannis given how upset he was after the 76ers loss.
