Friday, December 31st finds the Chicago Bulls playing the Indiana Pacers for the second time in five days and the third time this season.
Indy routed the Heat 109-77 on November 22nd while Miami won the second match 113-105 on Sunday. The clubs will finish their season set on February 4th in Indiana.
Both teams last played Wednesday with Indy losing 108-116 to the Hornets while the Bulls played consecutive matches versus the Hawks winning the first match (130-118) on Monday and the second 131-117 on Wednesday
The Bulls hold the all-time record between the clubs with 99 wins in 196 meetings. Last season, the teams played three times Chicago taking two of the three contests.
Chicago Bulls
Having navigated the worst of the COVID outbreak that hit their squad the Bulls are riding a five-game winning streak. That Chicago only lost two games while the roster was in nightly flux speaks to how far the team has already grown.
The moves VP Artūras Karnišovas and GM Marc Eversley made this offseason have gelled much faster than expected. DeMar DeRozan, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso were the perfect fits with Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic.
That factor stood out in the two recent victories versus Atlanta, particularly from the Bulls backcourt.
DeRozan averaged 27.5 points, nine assists, and 4.5 rebounds in the two wins. LaVine delivered an identical 27.5 points with 3.0 rebounds, and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 66.7% from deep (on 7.5 attempts).
Vucevic delivered in both games versus Atlanta averaging 20.1 points and 18.5 rebounds plus 3.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.5 blocks. The big man took a bit longer to mesh but he’s on a roll achieving double-doubles in six of his last eight matches and has 15 in 25 games played.
On Wednesday, the ball was moving and the offense clicking — reflected by the club’s season-best 38 assists.
Five Bulls are in various stages of the health and safety protocols including Lonzo Ball, Ersan Ilyasova, Tony Bradley, Alfonzo McKinnie, and Marko Simonvic
Alex Caruso (foot) is out indefinitely while Patrick Wiliams (thumb) is lost for the season.
Indiana Pacers
The trio who are rumored to be on the trade block continues to put up impressive individual performances since the Athletic article outed their availability. Notably, the three-game win streak that followed the news hasn’t continued with the Pacers 2-5 in their last seven games.
It’s possible the trio is more focused on auditioning than helping the Pacers build up the win column. In the most recent match, all five starters scored in double-figures plus Oshae Brissett (14).
Domantas Sabonis registered his 25th double-double of the season with 15 points, 18 rebounds, plus seven assists, two steals, and a block. Caris LeVert led the Pacers scoring 27 points.
The trio of Myles Turner (14), Justin Holiday (12), and Chris Duarte (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Jeremy Lamb is the only Pacers player still in protocols and is questionable for Friday as is Malcolm Brogdon who is nursing a sore Achilles. T.J. McConnell (wrist) and TJ Warren (foot) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
