Saturday, December 4th finds the Chicago Bulls facing the Brooklyn Nets in their second meeting this season. In the initial meeting on November 8th, the Bulls defeated the Nets 118-95.
Brooklyn is playing the second game of a back-to-back set having beat the Wolves 110-105 on Friday while the Bulls last played Thursday at MSG with a 119-115 win versus the Knicks.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Nets taking two of the three contests. The Bulls hold the advantage all-time having won 95 times of the club’s 177 meetings.
Chicago Bulls
For anyone (raises hand) who wasn’t necessarily buying the early Chicago Bulls hype, it’s time to get on board the train recognizing this club is one of the elite teams.
I’ll admit part of my early hesitancy had to do with buying into the belief Alex Caruso was as good as it turns out he is. Perhaps it’s because Lakers players get hyped to the max and it leads us to believe maybe it’s the Hollywood lights and not necessarily talent that is shining.
No one had to convince me DeMar DeRozan was the mid-range assassin or that Lonzo Ball was a quality point guard who offers lockdown defense and deadly 3-point shooting.
Caruso was another matter, but it’s impossible to ignore the issues the Lakers are having defensively this season in particular defending guards and wings.
And, based on the Bulls’ defensive improvement and his specific effect all credit goes to Caruso who will undoubtedly get some all-defensive team consideration. Although his stats aren’t topping the leaderboard he’s presence is no less important.
In the win versus the Knicks, he scored just six points but added six rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
DeRozan was the top scorer with 34 points along with six rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block. Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic each added 27 points.
Brooklyn Nets
Although the Nets lead the East they still feel like there is ample work to be done and they aren’t getting much love from their Eastern counterparts who feel they get a biased whistle.
Heading into the match on Friday three of the last four teams who played the Nets felt they were getting an unfair advantage on both sides of the court.
Cavaliers J.B. Bickerstaff, Celtics Ime Udoka, and the Knicks Tom Thibodeau all complained loudly about how the Nets get calls on offense and also get away without penalty on defense.
To start the season James Harden wasn’t getting to the line averaging 4.7 free throws through the initial 12 games (and that included a game where he got 19 but in the last nine games he’s averaging 10 free throws per match (and got 15 on Friday).
Opponents are furious that he’s getting the benefit of the doubt on those “offensive calls” that refs were supposed to stop plus he’s being allowed to defend aggressively and get away with fouls that the opponents are being whistled for against him.
On Friday 12 of his 20 points came at the line and the combo of Harden (15) and Durant (13) took more free throws than the entire Wolves team (24). Durant had the more efficient game with a double-double of 30 points (9 of 18) with 10 rebounds.
Patty Mills (23), LaMarcus Aldridge (13), and James Johnson (11) were the other double-figure scorers.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Chicago Bulls vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
It will be very intriguing to witness how the whistle works in this match as the trio of DeRozan, Harden and Durant take the fourth, fifth, and sixth most free throws respectively.
I prefer the Bulls’ overall two-way schemes to the Nets but I’m antsy to pick Chicago given the recent officiating and for one of the few times this season the whistle factor is affecting my prediction.
