Monday, January 3rd, finds the Charlotte Hornets facing the Washington Wizards for the third time this season. Charlotte won both the prior games this season on November 17th (97-87) and on the 22nd (109-103). They’ll finish the regular-season series in Charlotte on April 10th.
Charlotte played the front side of a back-to-back set Sunday in a 99-133 loss to Phoenix while the Wizards lost a one-point heartbreaker (119-120) to the Bulls on Saturday.
Charlotte Hornets
As they say, timing is everything and the Hornets discovered that on Sunday facing a motivated Suns club who were coming off consecutive losses for just the second time this season.
The match highlighted the personalities of the two teams. Phoenix takes a business-like approach while Charlotte is more carefree prefering free-flowing high-paced track meets.
Aware of the Hornets’ bad habit of slow starts, the Suns jumped on them from the tip and led 73-47 by the half. Despite all four Suns centers being unavailable as well as Jae Crowder, the Hornets failed to use that to their advantage.
The teams scored identical points in the paint, but given their frontcourt advantage the most egregious mistake by Charlotte was allowing the Suns to outrebound them 52 to 35 including 13 to 5 on the offensive glass.
Highlighting the issues LaMelo Ball had just a single assist although he led the Hornets scoring with 17 points. Kelly Oubre (15), Ish Smith (13), and Mile Bridges (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
PJ Washington (conditioning) and Scottie Lewis (protocols) are questionable for Monday.
Washington Wizards
For the second consecutive night newly minted 3-point sniper DeMar DeRozan beat a team with a walk-off perimeter swish.
Watch for DeRozan to capture the Eastern Conference player of the week as he became the first player in NBA history to win back-to-back games with a walk-off 3-point buzzer-beater.
Overall the Wizards played a solid match although the defense continues to be problematic it’s hard to harp on them given the numerous players they are missing who are entered in the health and safety protocols.
Kyle Kuzma (29 points, 12 rebounds) and Bradley Beal (27 points, 16 assists) both produced double-doubles in the losing effort. Daniel Gafford (19), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (13), Deni Avdija (10), and Corey Kispert (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Seven Wizards are in protocols with six who are questionable for Monday including Davis Bertans, Montrezl Harrell, Rui Hachimura, Brad Wanamaker, Raul Neto, and Aaron Holiday. Spencer Dinwiddie is the lone Wizard who is in protocols and listed as out indefinitely.
Thomas Bryant (knee) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Wizards are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Hornets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Charlotte’s last 5 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Washington’s last 5 games.
Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
In terms of the big three categories Charlotte ranks second offensively (112.8), 28th defensively (113.4) and 19th in net differential (negative -0.6) compared to Washington who are 21st (108.2), 23rd (110.5), and 23rd (negative -2.3) respectively,
The Hornets are one of the most exciting teams to watch, but it’s hard to buy stock in them when they perform like they did Sunday showing little to no fight. The Wizards have their own issues but at least they compete to the buzzer.
On paper I like the Hornets talent better but the game Sunday truly left a bad impression — Charlotte is all about the fun wins but aren’t willing to get dirty to get those ugly wins. Factor in the Wiz lost the two prior meetings and will be motivated to split the season series.
