Charlotte Hornets
Charlotte was the beneficiary of Draymond’s Green double technical in the final ten seconds of a 102–100 win over Golden State on Saturday.
Terry Rozier calming sunk both free throws to tie the game. Then he hit the game-winning, fadeaway jump shot from the corner as time expired.
Rozier finished with a game-high 36 points. No one else on the Hornets had more than 15 and they likely only won the game because of Green’s outburst when the refs gave Charlotte a timeout on what he believed was still a loose ball.
And then there was the fact that Stephen Curry did not play after feeling unwell during warmups. It is not related to the coronavirus, reportedly.
Now a West Coast road trip begins for Charlotte all the way through to the All-Star Game. The Hornets begin in Utah and visit Phoenix, Golden State, Sacramento, Portland and Minnesota.
Utah Jazz
The Jazz will not be an easy first opponent, to say the least. Utah lost for just the sixth time all season in its last time out, 116–112, in Los Angeles against the Clippers.
Donovan Mitchell scored 35 with five assists and just one turnover. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well but neither did the rest of his team. Utah finished 12-of-34 from outside, which isn’t great for it.
That includes Jordan Clarkson, who finished 1-for-7 from three but is averaging over 19 points per game this season.
Clarkson is more than a -300 frontrunner for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award and he ought to be a bigger favorite than that. He has this award on lock with the sort of season he’s having.
Unless he goes down with a serious injury sooner rather than later, Clarkson will usher in a new era in an award that has been dominated by a few players in the last decade.
The first was Jamal Crawford and then Lou Williams, who each won the award three times. Eric Gordon, though he only won one, was always in the mix, too.
Clarkson, who started his collegiate career at Tulsa before transferring to Mizzou before going in the second round in 2014, has just found a perfect role with the Jazz this season.
