The road Hornets enter this contest coming off of a 132-115 loss to the Miami Heat on the road. They entered that one as 8.5-point favorites.
The home Magic are coming off of a 114-97 win over the Phoenix Suns at home. They were 7-point underdogs ahead of that one.
On the year, the Hornets are 5-9 ATS, while the Magic are 6-6-1 ATS.
These two teams have faced off once already during the 2022-23 regular season. The first matchup was also at Amway Center, and the Magic walked away with a convincing 113-93 win despite being 1.5-point underdogs.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets suffered a big loss to Miami on Saturday, but what a relief it was to see LaMelo Ball finally hit the court if you’re Charlotte.
Ball’s debut was spoiled, but the young star guard dropped 15 points, collected six assists and snagged six rebounds in 28 minutes.
His production will improve as he gets into game shape, and I’d expect that to start on Monday against an Orlando team that’s not on the same level as Miami.
The Hornets so far this season average 108.7 points per game. That number puts the team in the No. 26 spot in the Association.
Looking at the advanced stats, Charlotte scores 103.8 points per 100 possessions—a number that slots the team in at 28th for Offensive Efficiency.
Defensively, the Hornets are giving up 114.7 points per contest. So far in 2022-23, that number is good enough for No. 21.
In terms of Defensive Efficiency, this group allows 108.6 points per 100 possessions. Across 30 teams, they rank 14th in that category.
As of this writing, the Hornets list Gordon Hayward and Cody Martin as out, while Dennis Smith Jr. is currently day-to-day.
Orlando Magic
Orlando has an expansive injury report to consider, but it all starts with the new face of the franchise, Paolo Banchero. The rookie went through practice on Saturday, and as of this writing Sunday evening, he remains questionable for Monday’s showdown with Charlotte.
Also on the injury report is Moritz Wagner, Markelle Fultz, Gary Harris, Cole Anthony and Jonathan Isaac, all remaining out.
The Magic on the year are scoring 110.4 points per game and 108.5 points per 100 possessions. Those numbers slot them in at 22nd and 19, respectively—the latter a tie with the Washington Wizards.
Defensively, Orlando allows 112.4 points per night on average, placing them in 13th place.
In terms of Defensive Efficiency, Orlando is giving up 108.9 points per 100 possessions—a number that ranks 17th as of this writing Saturday night.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Hornets are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game.
- Hornets are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 Monday games
- Hornets are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games playing on 1 days rest.
- Magic are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 home games.
Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic NBA Prediction:
The recent trends above point to an Orlando win against the spread, but they also don’t reflect a Hornets team with their best player back in the fold.
That’s not to say the Hornets are suddenly world-beaters. Far from it. They have a lot of ground to make up after a 3-11 start. But I do think we’ll see positive momentum starting Monday against the Magic, especially if Banchero is unable to make his return.
At +1, Charlotte is one of the more conservative underdog picks you’ll find on Monday, but don’t let the lack of splash deter you.
Hornets on the road in a close one.
