Sunday, December 5th, finds the Charlotte Hornets facing the Atlanta Hawks in their second meeting of the season. In the initial match on November 20th, the Hawks won 115-105.
This is the final game of the Hornets four-city road trip with Charlotte last playing on Wednesday in a heartbreaking clutch time loss to the Bucks. The Hawks last played Friday also in clutch time defeat (96-98) to the 76ers.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Hornets taking two of the three contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record with 66 wins in 123 matches.
Charlotte Hornets
Although the Hornets lost to the Bucks their head coach James Borrego was very happy with his team’s effort and acknowledged they need to be better on the defensive end of the floor.
LaMelo Ball’s career night went to waste as the sophomore scored 36 points featuring eight 3-pointers as well as nine assists, five rebounds, three steals, and a block.
Kelly Oubre Jr. continues to fit in with his new team well providing scoring punch off the bench with 25 points. Most Improved Player candidate Miles Bridges was also strong with 22 points and nine rebounds.
Gordon Hayward (18 points) and Terry Rozier (10 points) were the other double-figure contributors.
While Borrego may be happy with his team’s effort against the defending champs the fact Charlotte allowed Milwaukee to erase an 18 point lead punctuates the need for his crew to be as invested in defending as they are scoring.
Charlotte ranks dead last for opponent scoring allowing 115.4 points per game and 25th in opponent field goal percent (46.6%).
The bigger issue for the Hornets is four players have been entered into the NBA health and safety protocols with the team sending players and staff home. The most concerning of the players listed is LaMelo Ball.
Joining him are Jalen McDaniels, Terry Rozier, and Mason Plumlee. The latter is a bit odd given he was listed out for a calf injury. Cody Martin could be a fifth on the list given he’s was on the injury report under “illness”.
Atlanta Hawks
In what was a rollercoaster game the Eastern Conference semi-finalists from last season battled to the buzzer but the 76ers were the team who got the better of the Hawks this time.
Entering the match the Hawks had only lost twice at State Farm Arena in 10 opportunities. In the back and forth affair each team took turns building double-digit leads.
Philly took the first quarter but Atlanta erased the nine-point deficit taking their own lead via a 30-12 second quarter. But, the final quarter dictated the victor as the 76ers held the Hawks to a measly nine points in the fourth while scoring 20 to capture the two-point win.
Trae Young registered a double-double of 25 points and 10 assists. John Collins offered a strong effort of 18 points, eight rebounds, a steal, and two blocks.
Danilo Gallinari was the top reserve contributor with 18 points, eight rebounds, and three assists but his most important shot rimmed out leading to the Sixers win. Kevin Huerter (12) and Lou Williams (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Atlanta had won eight of nine games but with this loss have lost two of their last three matches.
Bogdan Bogdanovic (ankle) and Cam Reddish (illness) are both questionable for Sunday. Onyeka Okongwu (shoulder) and DeAndre Hunter (wrist) are out indefinitely.
