On Wednesday, January 6th, Southeast Division rivals the Charlotte Hornets and Atlanta Hawks will meet for the first time this 2020-21 campaign.
The Hawks hold the all-time record between the teams with 64 wins in 119 meetings. Last season, the teams played twice due to the pandemic with the Hawks winning both contests.
Charlotte Hornets
Aside from back-to-back wins versus the Nets and Mavericks the Hornets haven’t been able to capture victories this season.
The oddity is the teams the Hornets have lost to are predominantly feature teams they should theoretically beat like the Cavaliers, Thunder, and a Ja Morant-less Grizzlies crew.

They lost consecutive contests versus the 76ers with the second game being a worse loss (101-118) than the initial contest (112-127) with few positives to take away.
One of those positives was six Hornets scored in double-figures led by Gordon Hayward with 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block.
Devonte Graham continues to struggle but was markedly better in this outing with 15 points on 5 of 13 shooting. The player some are suggesting James Borrego should replace him in the starting rotation with is rookie LaMelo Ball who registered 12 points, seven rebounds, nine assists, and two steals.
Terry Roziers (12), PJ Washington (12), and Jalen McDaniels (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Another positive was the 30 assists the Hornets produced highlighting their ball movement although there is work to be on the defensive side of the hardwood.
Cody Zeller (fractured hand) remains out until February while Grant Riller (knee) is out indefinitely.
Atlanta Hawks
While the Hawks got out to a hot start winning three consecutive games they’ve cooled off losing three of the past four games with a myriad of players on the injury list and defense standing out as an issue.
Conversely, the Knicks who are playing solidly on the defensive end stole the game from the Hawks. Trae Young led the way with a double-double of 31 points and 14 assists while Clint Capella also reached that milestone with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
All five starters reached double-figure scoring as DeAndre Hunter (23), John Collins (18), and Cam Reddish (10) met the mark.
The issue was the bench who were outscored Knicks’ rookie Immanuel Quickley 16-14 while New York’s reserves held a 30 to 14 margin over the Hawks reserves.
Part of the issue is the injured players. While Bogdon Bogdanovic played he is dealing with an injured ankle which might keep him out Wednesday and Rajon Rondo (knee) is also questionable.
Danilo Gallinari has an ankle injury that will keep him off the hardcourt until mid-January. The trio of Tony Snell (foot), Kris Dunn (knee), and Onyeka Okongwu (toe) are all out indefinitely.
