Charlotte Hornets
The first-place Hornets (for now) roll into Phoenix after beginning their West Coast road trip by getting steamrolled in Utah.
Malik Monk, Gordon Hayward and LaMelo Ball all had at least 20 points in the loss. Ball took 20 shots to get there, however. Of the three, Monk was most efficient, finishing 7-of-12 off the bench.
The Jazz turned it over 22 times and it didn’t even seem to matter. Three guys had 20-plus off the bench alone for Head Coach Quinn Snyder. Joe Ingles, Georges Niang and Jordan Clarkson combined for 62.
Donovan Mitchell led all scorers with 23 points and he had eight assists, which doesn’t look as great next to six turnovers.
Five more games remain on the trip and then the All-Star Break hits. Charlotte could certainly use Devonte’ Graham back before then.
The third-year guard has missed the last two games and five out of the last seven with a knee.
That’s a shame because after a slow start he was starting to do more in the offense. Graham had 13 consecutive games scoring in double-figures with some good assist numbers, too.
That was when he and Terry Rozier started with Ball coming off the bench. It will be interesting to see if Head Coach James Borrego leaves the rookie in the starting five or not if Graham does return.
As many fans are calling for Ball to see more minutes, it would only help to get Graham back in the rotation.
Phoenix Suns
Phoenix came into Monday’s game against Portland having just demolished New Orleans and Memphis by nearly a combined 50 points in back-to-back games on the road.
It whipped up on Portland, too, 132–100. Devin Booker led all scorers with 34 points and he did it extremely efficiently, as has been the norm this season.
Booker needed just 17 attempts and eight free throws to get those 34 points. He’s scoring more efficiently than ever this season and should be announced as an easy selection for the Western Conference All-Star Team Tuesday night.
His turnovers are down, too, though not by as much as one may think. He has only one against the Blazers and the Suns finished with just seven as a team, compared to 29 assists.
A lot of that can be attributed to Chris Paul, who just continues to impress late in his career after looking like his days as a star in the league were behind him in Houston.
He has the Suns rolling, even in the loss column with both teams from Los Angeles and just two wins behind.

The pieces are just working so well together. The roster is fully healthy. They had a day to rest at home after trouncing Portland. Confidence will be high.
It’s hard to believe the rest of the season will be so rosy for the Suns. Trouble is always around the corner. For now, play the hot hand and stick with Phoenix to make it a fourth in a row by double-digits.
