Wednesday, November 23rd, the Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors meet for the second of four meetings this season. The Nets won the initial meeting on October 21st (109-105). Brooklyn will host again on December 2nd with the final meeting on December 16th in Toronto.
Brooklyn is completing a back-to-back set having lost 106-115 to a severely shorthanded 76ers squad on Tuesday while the Raptors have been off since Saturday when they lost a nailbiter 122-124 in overtime to the Hawks
The teams have played a total of 105 occasions in their history with the Raptors winning 60 contests. Last season, the clubs played four times with the teams splitting the contests.
Brooklyn Nets
Fans in Philly were eagerly anticipating the return of Ben Simmons to Wells Fargo. But with Joel Embiid, James Harden, and Tyrese Maxey all sidelined with injuries and the Nets Big 3 all healthy things looked bleak for Philly.
Some games take on a different level of importance and with Simmons returning to his former team’s arena with a volatile fanbase it was sort of expected KD and Kyrie Irving would be amped to perform similarly to how they did last March after the Harden trade.
Instead, they were out hustled, out gritted, and completely dominated on the glass. Philly won the rebounding edge 49 to 35 and 20 to 4 on the offensive glass.
That’s significant because the 76ers rank 27th in offensive rebounding while the Raptors rank third and this wasn’t an outlier for Brooklyn who is equal opportunity glass avoiders.
Yuta Watanabe (hamstring) is questionable for Wednesday. TJ Warren (foot) is out.
Toronto Raptors
The ending in Atlanta left a sting, but the fact they were even in that game while missing seven rotation players let alone in overtime was a testament to the Raptors’ culture.
They’ve been mired by injury but some good news is on the horizon. Pascal Siakam should be back shortly, and they’ve just completed the hardest stretch of their schedule.
To wit, Toronto hasn’t had a single rest advantage (games where a team has extra rest over their opponent) but will get 13 (most) to finish the season starting with this game. Conversely, they’ll have six rest disadvantages (second fewest).
In comparison, the top 12 East teams have 6 to 8 rest advantage games remaining (Cavs/Hawks have 11) and 7 or 8 rest disadvantages (Celtics have nine, Pacers/Bulls have 10).
In this group, they also play the second-fewest back-to-back sets (nine) with the Celtics having the fewest (eight) and the majority having 10 to 11 sets remaining.
One area on the schedule where the Raptors have a disadvantage is the baseball sets (consecutive games in same market). While they reduce travel time the disadvantage is they typically result in a split decision.
Teams with fewer gain an edge like the Knicks/Bulls (1) and Nets (2) who play the least whereas Toronto and Miami play the most (7). In fact, the majority of East squads (8) play three or four sets. Gary Trent Jr. (hip/illness) and Chris Boucher (illness) are probable, Dalano Banton (ankle), and Scottie Barnes (knee) are questionable while Otto Porter Jr. (broken toe) and Justin Champagnie (back) are out Wednesday. Pascal Siakam (groin) and Precious Achiuwa (ankle) are out indefinitely.

With three minutes remaining Jacques Vaughn waved the white flag in Philly no doubt because the Nets are playing the B2B but also because they are in a 5 in 7 nights segment of the schedule.
The point spread is meager considering the B2B but the oddsmakers are probably equally wary of who’ll suit up for Toronto, albeit word is Trent Jr. and Boucher are definitely back. That should give the Raptors enough to net the win and cover the meager point spread.
