One of the best in the West takes on one of the least in the East on Saturday night when the Brooklyn Nets head to San Antonio to take on the always consistent Spurs.
These two teams are at opposite ends of the NBA spectrum and this should be a pretty easy game for Kawai Leonard and the Spurs.
It’s been a rough 21 games for the Brooklyn Nets and it doesn’t look like it will get any easier for them. This is just a poor team in the midst of a rebuilding phase.
The Nets are the worst in the league in opponents’ points per game, giving up 114.2 per game. They’ve allowed 110 or more in all but four of their games this year, resulting in multiple blowouts.
The team is actually ranked ninth in points per game, although some of that can be equated to garbage time points when an opponent’s bench is playing the fourth quarter.
The Nets hitched their wagon to point guard Jeremy Lin and he was proving to be a welcome addition to the team. It was short-lived, however, and he’s been missing from the lineup since early November due to a hamstring injury.
Brook Lopez has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise awful season. He’s averaging 20.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
The Nets will look to capitalize on the Spurs low scoring offense and find some way to string together two straight wins after a 116-111 win against Denver.
San Antonio Spurs
The post-Tim Duncan era has been off to a fantastic start for the Spurs. While the team ranks in the bottom third in PPG (102.8), it ranks 3rd overall in opponent’s PPG (97.8).
The Gregg Popovich Spurs have always been about consistency over flashiness and that trend is continuing this year. They are gutting out wins, stifling offenses, and playing like a 2nd seed in the Western Conference should be playing.
As a team, the Spurs are shooting 46% from the field and averaging a little over 23 assists per game.
Kawhi Leonard has truly taken the next step and become the leader of this team. He’s averaging 24.4 PPG on 46% shooting and has a Player Efficiency Rating of 26.7, the best of his career.
The Spurs are at home on Saturday night, which surprisingly hasn’t been their strong suit so far this year.
The team sits at 5-4 in the AT&T Center but an impressive 13-1 on the road.
NBA Betting Trends:
- San Antonio is 2-7 ATS at home
- Brooklyn is 4-1 ATS in last five games
- San Antonio is 1-4 ATS in last five games
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Prediction:
Despite the Spurs coming off a loss and the Nets off a win, I don’t think there’s any way a lackluster Nets offense can win against a fantastic Spurs defense.
Regardless of the average record for the Spurs at home, there’s no way the team doesn’t show up against Brooklyn. This should be an easy win.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Nets +13.5
This has the feel of an early blowout for the Spurs, which means Coach Pop will probably sit his starters for much of the fourth quarter. The score won’t dictate the quality of play, but I believe the Nets keep this within 12 when all is said and done.
