Tuesday, November 22nd, the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers play the first of four scheduled meetings this season. Philly will host again on January 25th while Brooklyn will host games on February 11th and April 9th.
The Nets last played Sunday defeating the severely shorthanded Grizzlies 127-115 while the 76ers last played Saturday losing 109-112 to the Wolves.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Nets taking three of the four contests. The 76ers hold the advantage all-time having won 119 times of the club’s 207 meetings.
Brooklyn Nets
Kyrie Irving returned to the hardwood following his franchise-mandated suspension that lasted eight games. The Nets were 5-3 in his absence which is significant considering they are 3-6 with him in the lineup including the win on Sunday.
Brooklyn got lucky facing the decimated Grizzlies who were missing their starting backcourt and inarguably their best two offensive players.
Irving understandably looked rusty early but found his legs as the match wore on finishing with 14 points, five rebounds, a steal, and a block but failed to post any assists.
They’ll benefit again from an injury-riddled 76ers team but make no mistake the true Sixth Man (the Philly crowd) will be in full effect as they serenade Ben Simmons’ return to their court.
Brooklyn allows opponents to score 111.6 points per game (11th) while they limit foes to 44.6% field percentage ranking fourth. They struggle to stop opponents on the perimeter with them shooting 38.1% and ranks 26th.
The offensive end of the court is where the Nets perform best scoring 111.6 points per game (16th), shooting 48.5% from the field (4th) and 36.9% from the perimeter (12th).
Nicolas Claxton (personal) is questionable for Tuesday. TJ Warren (foot) is expected to return in early November.
Philadelphia 76ers
In contrast to the Nets, this Sixers squad excels on the defensive side of the court and struggles offensively a factor made all the dicier without two of their three best offensive talents on the court.
And, it’s not just the absence of 44.9 points from James Harden (22.0) and Tyrese Maxey (22.9) but the ten dimes Harden dishes. That’s a ton for a team who don’t have many ball handlers and playmakers.
On the season, the 76ers score an average of 108.6 points per game ranking 28th. Philly shoots 47.1 percent from the field (12th) and 37.5 percent from the perimeter ranking which ranks 10th overall.
Punctuating their defensive dominance the 76ers rank third allowing 106.6 opponent points per game while limiting foes to 46.2 percent from the field ranking 15th and possessing the best opponent perimeter percentage holding foes to 31.7 percent.
Major injury news – Joel Embiid (foot) is OUT Tuesday. Tyrese Maxey (foot), James Harden (foot), and Jaden Springer (quad) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The 76ers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Brooklyn’s last 11 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Philadelphia’s last 7 games.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
It’s a fortunate turn for the Nets that they keep getting to face teams without core players and theorthetically this should be an easier game for them — but there are extenuating circumstances.
The biggest elephant in the room is Ben Simmons who will be making his first on-court appearance (he sat on the bench on March 10th) back in Philly. In his last three games, he’s scored in double-digits and Sunday was his first 20+ scoring effort (22).
That should come in handy, however, the 76ers fans are sure to be relentless toward him.
The big news and I mean BIG is Joel Embiid is now listed as out Tuesday due to a foot injury. That erases my original thought process of Embiid getting out his pent-up frustration for the years he struggled to coexist with Simmons.
Suffice to say – I switched my original choice because I simply can’t see Tobias Harris leading the Sixers to victory.
