Sunday, November 14th finds Kevin Durant and his Brooklyn Nets returning to play his former Oklahoma City Thunder squad for the first time this season.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Nets being pushed by the Pelicans but ultimately winning. The Thunder also collected a victory versus the Kings to push their winning streak to four in-a-row.
Last season, the squads played twice with the teams splitting each winning on the road. The Thunder holds the all-time record having bested the Nets in 59 of their 93 matches.
Brooklyn Nets
Despite the absence of Kyrie Irving the Brooklyn Nets are serving notice this team is still very much a title contender with or without the enigmatic point guard.
Part of the reason to buy into that hype is the play of Kevin Durant who is leading the league with 29.4 points per game shooting a robust 58.9 percent from the field and a ridiculous 43.3 percent from the perimeter with 8.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game.
So much for the theory players who suffer torn Achilles don’t return to perform to their previous heights. Phooey — KD is on pace to win the Most Valuable Player award.
Incredulously, he’s only won the regular season MVP once in his career so the narrative should only grow if he maintains his current stats and the Nets keep winning.
Brooklyn almost blew a 21 point lead versus the Pelicans but Durant and cohort James Harden made sure that didn’t happen locking down in clutch time to secure the “W”.
Durant produced a line of 28 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and hit all three of his 3-pointers scoring six critical points in clutch time.
Harden posted a double-double of 39 points and 12 assists along with five rebounds and connected on six of his 3-pointers including the one that sealed the win.
Notably Harden got to the line for 15 free throws so he’s either figured out the new officiating or the refs were kind. Joe Harris scored 24 points also connecting from deep on six of his eight attempts.
Oklahoma City Thunder
I wonder if Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the OKC Thunder youngsters heard the statements by analysts and podcasters who suggested this team would be the worst in history and set a new record in futility.
For the record that would mean winning only eight games of 82 which seems highly unlikely given they’ve won five in 11.
One of those wins came versus the lottery-bound Pelicans who just proved to the Nets you can’t simply show up and beat them despite their record. But the other four include two against the Lakers as well as the Spurs and Kings.
In fact, they’ve won four games in a row and for the moment Mark Daigneault and Sam Presti are likely wondering at what point they pull the plug to ensure this team still nets a top draft pick.
To be clear, this team isn’t very good — rather they have a bonafide star in SGA, a top level defender in Luguentz Dort, a rookie (Josh Giddey) who plays beyond his 19 years and a bunch of scrappy, competitve youngsters.
That, a bunch of young guys who aren’t about to take comments like the above lying down. Nor are they likely to throw up the white flag for the Nets since especially with Kevin Durant (who famously left the organization) in the house.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Thunder are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 6-3-1 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
The Nets can’t simply get up by double-digits and hit pause becasue four of five Thunder victories erased double-digit deficits. To wit, OKC rallied from deficits of 26 and 19 points (Lakers), 16 versus the Spurs, and 18 versus the Kings.
I’d be more open to calling for the trap game if it wasn’t for the Nets having just almost lost to the Pelicans and of course KD gets a little extra something in his bonnet when he plays back in OKC.
