Sunday, November 13th the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers meet for the first time this season. Brooklyn will host the second meeting on January 30th.
The Nets played Saturday in the front side of this back-to-back defeating the LA Clippers 110-95 while the Lakers last played Friday and joined the Rockets with their 10th seasonal loss after falling 114-120 to the Kings.
Last season, the squads played twice times with the teams splitting the two contests. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Nets in 67 of their 95 matches.
Brooklyn Nets
Every team wants its best players on the court but in the case of the Brooklyn Nets, Kyrie Irving’s suspension may have been the catalyst for the team to gel.
While Irving has been away serving his suspension the Nets removed Jacques Vaughn’s “interim” head coach tag and the club is 3-1 losing only to the Mavericks by two points.
They’re playing defense with a renewed vigor and while the schedule has played a role it’s no easy feat in this era of basketball to keep teams under 100 points which is something the Nets have done five straight times (including against the Wizards with Irving in the lineup).
Other factors are at play like Seth Curry rounding into form and looking more like the sniper he was before his injury plus Ben Simmons was moved to the bench to unclog the frontcourt issues of playing him beside Nic Claxton.
But the overwhelming sign Irving’s absence is helping is the joy the team is demonstrably playing with.
Without their enigmatic guard on site, the Nets aren’t being deluged with questions and can focus on playing basketball and it’s paying dividends.
He won’t be on hand again for this match but the big question is assuming he returns shortly how that will impact the team and whether they can retain this newfound success that has them right back in the mix of things in the East.
Yuta Watanabe (ankle) is questionable for Sunday. Kyrie Irving (suspension) is out. TJ Warren (foot) is expected to return in early November.
Los Angeles Lakers
Despite Anthony Davis (24 points, 14 rebounds) and Russell Westbrook (21 points, 11 assists) posting double-double performances the Lakers became the fourth team in the NBA to lose 10 games (Rockets, Hornets, Pistons).
With LeBron James out injured the pundits and sports shows are trying to come up with blood from a stone deals that would improve the Lakers.
The other 29 teams don’t get special compensation when they make bad moves so why should the Lakers (or Klutch Sports who seem to have way too much say in these matters) be given those unique privileges to bail out poor choices?
The Lakers began the season with strong defensive markers ranking in the top 10 for opponent scoring and efficiencies. But as the team has tried to break through to add ‘W’s they’ve slipped on defense and still haven’t won.
LA allows opponents to score an average of 116.4 points per game ranking 24th. Their opponents shoot 47.0 percent from the field which ranks 21st and 34.6 percent from behind the arc ranking in a three-way tie for 10th.
Those performances leapfrogged LA from 30th in scoring per game to 26th (108.3) but still can’t hide their 30th-ranked perimeter efficiency although they finally edged out of the 20’s shooting precisely 30%. They also rank 26th for field goal percentage (44.8%).
James (foot) was downgraded to doubtful while Anthony Davis (back) is probable for Sunday. Dennis Schroder (thumb) and Thomas Bryant (thumb) are still out.
