Wednesday, January 5th finds the Brooklyn Nets playing the Indiana Pacers for the second time this season. Brooklyn won the initial contest 105-98 on October 29th. The clubs will play once more on April 10th in Brooklyn.
The Nets last played Monday in a beat down at the hands of the Grizzlies while the Pacers were trailing the Knicks as of this posting.
Brooklyn Nets
As my preview for the Nets-Grizzlies match noted Brooklyn was going to have trouble with the rebounding and athleticism of Memphis and boy did they ever.
Memphis almost doubled the Nets on the glass winning it 61 to 33 and absolutely feasted on the offensive glass 23 to eight leading to 28 second-chance points scored.
Although the Net trailed points in the paint scoring (62 to 52) the final tally wasn’t truly indicative of the match because the young bench unit altered many of the stats during a late third and early fourth-quarter run.
At one point Memphis led by 28 points adding fodder to the narrative the Nets have major issues defeating the best teams in the association. To reiterate, against the teams who reside in the home court seeds in each conference the Nets are 0-7!
Broadening to include all teams with records over .500 doesn’t do much to bolster confidence as Brooklyn’s record is 6-9 against those clubs. This means the majority of their victories have come against clubs .500 and under (17-3).
Of the remaining 47 games, 24 are against teams with records .500 or better (including the rescheduled matches).
For the Nets to be considered a genuine title contender they’ll need to improve their win percentage versus those 24 teams as well as some that are on the cusp of .500 but were hampered by injury/COVID and getting healthy now.’
LaMarcus Aldridge (foot) is questionable, Kyrie Irving (conditioning) is probable and Joe Harris (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Indiana Pacers
Rick Carlisle has made more post-game speeches than any of his counterparts noting how proud he was of his team’s effort and how competitive his charges were. Unfortunately, more often than not they’ve been on the losing side of that equation.
Right from the start of the season, this phenomenon became a trend with the Pacers playing two overtime games in their first three matches.
They’ve reached the pivotal “clutch time” segment (last five minutes/score within five points) in 20 of their 37 matches but converted only four times. Not all of the losses were as dramatic as the DeMar DeRozan 3-point buzzer-beater Friday but the results were the same.
Indiana has at least four players (maybe five) who could be a pivotal contributor on a championship team. The problem is as constructed this team just doesn’t mesh.
Perhaps when TJ Warren returns he’ll be the missing piece but if not it’s time to make a major change whether it’s one or more players being dealt.
Pacers in protocols include Jeremy Lamb, Kelan Martin, Chris Duarte, Goga Bitadze, and Isaiah Jackson who are all are questionable while Malcolm Brogdon is doubtful. T.J. McConnell (wrist) and TJ Warren (foot) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 6-4 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The teams are 5-5 ATS in the last 10 matches
- The over/under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction
Kyrie Irving should make his season debut in this match and while his presence could prove to be problematic unless Brooklyn wins every game he plays in they’ll be a force offensively with him back.
Regardless of whether he plays, it’s hard to imagine the Nets or more specifically Kevin Durant will allow the losing streak to hit four.
