Sunday, December 12th finds the Brooklyn Nets playing the Detroit Pistons meet for the third time this season. Brooklyn took both of the initial meetings winning 117-91 on October 31st and 96-90 on November 5th.
Both teams played on Friday night with the Pistons losing 109-93 to the New Orleans Pelicans and the Nets defeating the Hawks 113-105.
The Detroit Pistons hold the all-time record between the clubs with 109 wins in 186 meetings versus the Brooklyn Nets. Last season, the teams played three times with the Nets victorious in two of the three contests.
Brooklyn Nets
While the Hawks are likely a better team than the record indicates the Nets were able to get the upper hand defeating them on Friday. It’s a commonality of Brooklyn’s season where they defeat the teams outside the playoff positions but struggle to beat the elite teams.
Five Nets scored in double-figures with Kevin Durant leading the way with 31 points, five rebounds, six assists, a steal, and three blocks. A game after James Harden struggled shooting he was a more efficient 8 of 17 for 20 points but missed all five 3-point attempts.
Harden collected a double-double adding 11 assists although his turnovers continue to be an issue with six in this contest. Bruce Brown and LaMarcus Aldridge scored 15 while Patty Mills and Cam Thomas scored 11 each.
An interesting tidbit is the Nets start games well possessing the fifth-best scoring in the first quarter but their rank drops with each quarter as the game progresses dropping to 26th for the final frame. Conversely, the Pistons’ best scoring quarter is the fourth.
Another issue for the Nets is the glass with Brooklyn ranking 30th on the offensive glass although the return of Nicolas Claxton should help to improve that.
Steve Nash rested Durant in Houston and will follow suit in this game only this time it’s Harden who’ll sit. Paul Millsap (personal) is also out. Joe Harris (ankle) and Kyrie Irving (personal) are out indefinitely.
Detroit Pistons
The losing streak is now at 11 games in a row for the Pistons following the loss to the Pelicans on Friday. Many were pointing fingers at the Thunder suggesting there needed to be league action (punishment) taken for their “tanking” and 73 point loss to the Grizzlies.
Yet, the Thunder followed up that game (where they were missing four of their core) by beating Detroit and then Toronto. OKC has double the victories of the Pistons.
Perhaps Dwane Casey will figure out a way to get his charges rolling and they’ll go on a run similar to what the Rockets have but I wouldn’t hold my breath because this team can’t score and only seems to defend in small pockets of each game.
Moreover, following the match Friday the Pistons reported Jerami Grant tore ligaments in his thumb when he fell to the court and is out indefinitely.
Versus the Pelicans, Detroit held a one-point halftime lead that disappeared in the second half. Rookie Cade Cunningham scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half and shot 5 of 17 from the field.
The trio of Grant, Saddiq Bey, and Hamidou Diallo all scored 11 points while Trey Lyles was the top scorer with 18 points.
Grant (thumb) Kelly Olynyk are out while Isaiah Livers (foot) is out indefinitely.

Aside from the Rockets game, Brooklyn has consistently beaten the lower clubs. With Harden out for rest on Sunday, Durant will have the opportunity to do what Harden couldn’t in Houston – – take care of business.
