Not only did the Nets fail to cover the monstrous number the betting markets lent them to cover against the Cavaliers, they lost outright, 147–135, in double overtime.
Brooklyn was between a nine and ten-point favorite on the road in the first game that Kyrie Irving joined Kevin Durant and James Harden for together.
It was never going to cover that number. Too much disconnect on both ends of the floor for the Nets had Cleveland leading the whole way. Only a fourth quarter comeback got the game into overtime, where scoring totals ballooned.
Durant finished with 38 and Irving 37 in his return. Harden had a triple-double with 12 assist but just 18 points.
Joe Harris and Reggie Perry combined for Brooklyn’s ten lone bench points in the game.
And that will be the challenge the Nets face for the rest of the year: depth. Even with a healthy and active roster, Brooklyn is thin. And the chances of the big three staying intact all season feels next to zero.
Collin Sexton led all scorers with 42 in the victory. The Cavaliers only played three bench players but they combined for 44 points.
Taurean Prince and Jarrett Allen, the two big pieces Cleveland acquired in making that multi-team Harden deal a reality, scored 29 of those points, nearly tripling Brooklyn’s entire bench total themselves.
The story will be the Nets’ growing pains. They certainly did not look great in their first game together. But Cleveland has been sneaky good this season.
Sexton was playing for the first time in six games and the Cavs could welcome Darius Garland back next, as soon as for this one.
He was a game-time call on Wednesday and has an even better chance to playing on Friday.
Garland’s prowess on the perimeter would give the Cavs another body to throw at Brooklyn’s short rotation — not to mention give their own some much-needed help.
So while the markets will continue to make it all about Brooklyn, Cleveland is showing in the early stages of this season that they aren’t a team to be underestimated, despite missing key players just about all season.

Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction: Cavs hang in.
Cleveland led the whole way on Wednesday. Look for Brooklyn to do the same in this one.
But the Cavs are ripe for a backdoor cover and sneak in to cash this one late.
Garland or no, I’ll take the underdogs but the possibility of the second-year’s return is an added bonus.
