Boston Celtics
In the final game of the Celtics’ five-game road trip, they have a tough challenge facing the top team in the NBA. They’ve split the games so far with close wins over the Warriors (111-107) and Clippers (119-115) and losses to the Kings (111-116) and the Suns (91-100).
The latter was a tough loss where the Bean Town crew struggled to find any offensive flow against a vastly improved Suns defense who held Boston to 35.5 percent from the floor and 38.6 percent from the perimeter.
Even their free throws were off as Boston shot 66.7 percent from the charity stripe where they typically shoot over 75 percent (75.4%).
Phoenix led by as many as 17 points but the Celtics cut it to three with 1:04 remaining on a Payton Pritchard 3-pointer for their final bucket of the game.
Jayson Tatum shouldered the load with 23 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and a steal. Like the majority of his teammates, he had an off night (8 of 22).
The player who struggled the most was Kemba Walker shooting 4 of 20 from the field and 4 of 11 from deep. He finished with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and three turnovers.
Pritchard (12), Daniel Theis (12), Grant Williams (10), and Jeff Teague (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
The absence of Jaylen Brown and Marcus Brown is felt particularly in games like Sunday when Boston desperately needed an injection of energy.
Brown has missed the last two games with a sore knee and is listed as day-to-day. Smart (calf) will be out until mid-month.
Romeo Langford had wrist surgery and will miss four to five months in recovery.
Utah Jazz
The best record in the NBA belongs to the Utah Jazz who just keep rolling. After the Nuggets ended the Jazz 11-game win streak they got right back to business to start a new streak which is now at four.
At season start I wasn’t buying into the Jazz hype. However, with a quarter of the season in the books the combination of Mike Conley feeling demonstrably more comfortable and Utah’s constancy is paying massive dividends.
I still wouldn’t pick them over either LA team or the Nuggets in a series and possibly a few others but gaining home court will be a huge advantage. The key will be whether Utah can maintain this intensity through to season end and into the playoffs.
Their most recent victory came on Sunday versus the Pacers who they held to 95 points. A substantial mark as Indiana averages 113.1 points per game.
Donovan Mitchell who is trying to facilitate more for his teammates came close to registering his first-ever triple-double missing the mark by a single rebound (27 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds) although he had a rough shooting night (9 of 25).
Rudy Gobert also registered a double-double (16 points, 16 rebounds), while Bojan Bogdanovic (18), and Jordan Clarkson (17) were the other double-digit contributors.
Conley (hamstring), Elijah Hughes (ankle), and Juwan Morgan (illness) are all day-to-day.
