On Monday, January 4, 2021, Atlantic Division rivals the Boston Celtics travel to Tampa Bay to play the transplanted Toronto Raptors. It’s the first meeting since the teams played in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals last postseason.
Last season, the squads played four times with the Celtics taking three out of four of the contests. Boston holds the all-time record between the squads with 57 victories in the team’s 97 meetings.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics who are already missing point guard Kemba Walker lost Jeff Teague to an ankle sprain on Sunday.
Although the Celtics beat Detroit in the teams’ second meeting with the Pistons in three days it came down to the wire (122-120).
Jaylen Brown led the scoring with 31 points while three starters posted double-doubles. Specifically, Jayson Tatum registered 24 points and 12 assists, Tristan Thompson 12 points, and 11 rebounds, and Marcus Smart with 17 points and 10 assists.
Daniel Theis (15) and Semi Ojeleye (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Jeff Teague (sprained ankle) and is questionable for Monday. Javonte Green (illness) is out. Kemba Walker (knee) and Romeo Langford (wrist) are out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
After starting the season 0-3 the Raptors finally got a victory against the Knicks despite not having their All-Star Pascal Siakam in the lineup who was benched for disciplinary reasons.
Yet, the next game featured the Raptors’ second loss to the Pelicans this season. In the final frame, the Raptors erased a 12 point lead and held the Pelicans to five scoring plays (just two between 10:22 and 42 seconds).
Yet, the whistle disparity was an issue again as the Pels shot 47 free throws including 27 in the fourth (Toronto had 27 total). For perspective, New Orleans was averaging 24.8 FTA per game and shot 19 versus the Thunder.
The Raptors did make a concerted effort to score in the paint and won that battle 46-36 but clearly allowing an opponent 20 extra free throws won’t help them win.
This season has been a struggle especially for Pascal Siakam who has fouled out twice in four games and has eight cumulative free-throw attempts after averaging 5.1 per game last season.
The backcourt led the way with Fred VanVleet registering 27 points, eight rebounds, and five assists while Kyle Lowry was masterful in the comeback finishing with 16 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
Chris Boucher (24), OG Anunoby (17), Norman Powell (12), and Pascal Siakam (10) were the other double-figure scorers.
Patrick McCaw remains out healing from offseason knee surgery.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Boston Celtics vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Toronto has shot 89 free throws through five games versus their opponents 136 and only got the advantage (one extra free throw) versus the Knicks.
They’ll need to figure it out because handing the Celtics an extra 10 or 20 free throws is like raising the white flag.
Losing doesn’t sit well with this Raptors squad so expect them to come out with playoff intensity. More importantly, the spotlight is on Siakam to have a strong performance.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Bet the under
Boston is playing on consecutive days and potentially without Teague. Still, I could go either way on this but it’s hard to bet against a fired-up Kyle Lowry.
