Wednesday, December 7th the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns meet for the first of two scheduled matches this season. Boston will host the second meeting on February 3rd.
Both teams last played Monday with the Celtics defeating the Raptors 116-110 while the Suns lost 111-130 to the Mavericks.
The Celtics hold the all-time record between the clubs with 74 wins in 133 meetings versus the Suns. Last season, the teams played on two occasions with each team winning on their home court.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics became the first team to register 20 wins this season and look unstoppable. The Raptors held the lead at the half and had held Jayson Tatum at bay in the first half (as they’ve typically done to him).
However, Tatum showed in one quarter why he’s the leading candidate to win MVP scoring 17 of his 31 points in the third. It highlighted the growth he’s made and how he’s comfortable taking over a game on a night when the offense isn’t necessarily as lethal as it’s been.
He finished with a double-double of 31 points and 12 rebounds while Jaylen Brown offered 22 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists.
The other notable in this match besides the third quarter was how they remained calm down the stretch. Toronto made six consecutive stops but the Celtics either forced a turnover or made the stop.
And that’s the most frightening aspect of the Celtics — as great as they’ve been offensively, they can still get much better defensively.
Boston’s offense is on another level ranking top three across the board averaging 120.6 points (1st), 49.4% from the field (3rd), and 40.2% from deep (1st).
They’re improving defensively with Robert Williams closing in on a return to bolster their averages of opponent scoring 113.6 points (15th), 47.2% field goal shooting (19th), and 35.4% from the perimeter (13th).
Al Horford (back) and Malcolm Brogdon (illness) are questionable for Wednesday. Robert Williams III (knee) and Danilo Gallinari (knee) are out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
The loss to the Mavericks was a bit troubling if you’re a Suns fan. This was the team that knocked them out (scratch that – EMBARRASSED THEM) of the playoffs yet they weren’t able to use that fact as motivation.
Perhaps it’s a sign of the wear and tear on Devin Booker who has been magnificent but carrying his team and that translated into a 4 of 13 night for 11 points.
Opponents score 109.3 points ranking sixth, shooting 46.4% (12th) from the field 36.5% from deep (22nd).
Offensively, Phoenix is in the top third of the league putting up 116.5 points per game ranking seventh overall. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 48.0% from the field and 38.4% from the perimeter ranking eighth and ninth respectively.
Chris Paul (heel), Torrey Craig (groin), and Duane Washington Jr. (hip) are all questionable. Jae Crowder (trade request) and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out.
