Monday, December 12th, finds the Boston Celtics facing the LA Clippers for the first of two scheduled meetings. Boston will host on December 29th.
Both teams last played Saturday with the Celtics falling to the Warriors 107-123 while the Clippers stars propelled them past the Wizards 114-107.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Clippers taking both contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 91 of their 136 matches.
Boston Celtics
The Bean Town crew became the first team to collect 20 wins and so far has looked like the class of the NBA. Their offense has been otherworldly and they’ve been ramping up their defensive intensity knowing elite teams were coming in this schedule segment.
While most earmarked Luka Doncic to be primed for the MVP, to this point in the season Jayson Tatum seems better positioned to win the award assuming continued excellence by the Celtics with Tatum maintaining his averages (forget the Warriors match – that was one game and he was due for an off night).
Through 26 games he’s averaging 30.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.0 blocks. per game.
His efficiency resembles the team’s prowess with Tatum attempting 20.9 field goals connecting at 47.2%, 9.3 perimeter shots with a 36.0% success rate, and attempting 8.1 free throws per game shooting 85.3%.
As for the team statistical markers, Boston ranks top five across the board averaging 120.3 points (1st) while shooting 49.1% from the field to rank fourth-best, and still maintained the top perimeter efficiency of 39.7% despite a rough night Saturday.
They’re improving defensively with opponents averaging 112.4 points (13th), 46.7% field goal shooting (13th), and 34.9% from the perimeter (14th).
Al Horford (quarantine) and Robert Williams III (knee) are questionable for Monday. Danilo Gallinari (knee) is out indefinitely.
LA Clippers
Having lost four of six matches the Clippers were breathing a sigh of relief to have their two superstars back especially when Kawhi Leonard hit the game-winning shot against the Hornets in his first game back.
But there are still chemistry issues to resolve as their 2-2 record since the superstars’ return demonstrates.
On one hand, it makes sense the team is experiencing problems because there is a lack of chemistry given Paul George and Kawhi Leonard are two-fifths of the starting lineup which changes the dynamics of the unit completely.
On the other hand, adding two top-end talents shouldn’t be throwing off the chemistry the team seemingly had prior to their return. They found a way to make it work Saturday versus the Wizards but the offense doesn’t look fluid at all.
Presently, they sit 30th for scoring averaging 107.7 points per game shooting 46.4% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 19th and 13th respectively.
Defensively, the Clippers’ opponents average 109.2 points per game (4th) and shoot 45.4% from the field (4th) and 34.8% from the perimeter (12th).
Norman Powell (groin) and Reggie Jackson (rest) are questionable.

The problem is the Clippers don’t seem fluid on either end of the court yet because they need more (consistent) reps with a fully healthy roster.
Given the loss to the Warriors, it’s hard to fathom the Celtics losing as they’ll be keen to make sure one loss doesn’t extend into a streak.
