Friday, May 7th finds the Boston Celtics playing the Chicago Bulls for the third and final time this season. This game will determine who wins the tiebreaker as each team has collected one win. The Celtics won the January 25th match 119-103 while the Bulls won the April 19th game 102-96.
Last season, due to the pandemic the clubs only played twice with Boston winning both contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having won 127 matches of the 232 played
Boston Celtics
Then there are the middle teams who are jockeying for position whether it’s to get into the play-in tournament or stay above the seventh seed to avoid it.
This latter category is where the Celtics find themselves. They enter Friday deadlocked with the Heat but are clinging to the sixth seed. They can still move up to fifth (they trail the Hawks by one game) but their priority frankly is staying out of that seventh seed.
It’s a far cry from where they began the season expecting to improve upon the recent success and three Eastern Conference Final appearances in four years.
Boston has won three of four and faces three crucial games starting with this Bulls match followed by two consecutive games versus the Heat.
Tristan Thompson (pectoral strain) and Romeo Langford (concussion protocol) are probable for Friday. Robert Robert is suffering from turf toe is questionable while Jaylen Brown (right ankle) is out Friday.
Chicago Bulls
It’s been tough going for the Chicago Bulls without Zach LaVine available. The All-Star missed 11 games due to COVID health and safety protocols. During his time off the hardwood, the Bulls struggled to collect a 4-7 record and were on a four-game losing streak as they entered gameplay Thursday.
The big news was LaVine was back and that seemed to buoy the Bulls as they rode the momentum of his return collecting a win over the Charlotte Hornets. Nikola Vucevic delivered a double-double of 29 points and 14 rebounds while LaVine scored 13 as one of seven Bulls to score in double-figures.
Chicago had fallen to 12th and were 4.5 games back of the 10th seeded Wizards. The good news was the victory versus Charlotte pushed them ahead to 11th. The bad news — the Wizards won in overtime to defeat the Raptors and add to their healthy lead over the Bulls.
The Pacers who had also been struggling also got a victory so the Bulls find themselves essentially needing to win out and hope for some help from other teams to get that 10th seed.
Vucevic is listed as questionable for Monday as he continues to deal with tightness in his right adductor. LaVine (health and safety protocols) is doubtful and Troy Brown Jr. (ankle sprain) is out
