(14-10) Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls (5-20)
Saturday, December 8 finds the Boston Celtics meeting up vs. the Chicago Bulls for their second meeting of the 2018-19 regular season. Boston last played Thursday in an easy victory over the Knicks. Chicago meanwhile are in the second game of a back to back set having played the OKC Thunder on Friday.
Last season, Boston took the season series winning three of the four matches and took the initial game this season. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Bulls in 123 of their 226 matches.
Depending on how much credence you afford strength of schedule the Celtics have turned a corner. Winners of the last four games and five of six Boston has seemingly fixed their offensive woes.
Albeit this comes during a stretch where the Celtics are playing 11 games featuring only one seeded team. The key to the progress stems from a shift in the lineups.
Something I’ve repeatedly pointed to was Brad Stevens had all his offensive weapons playing together and his best defenders were coming off the bench.
However, the move to bring Gordon Hayward and now Jaylen Brown off the bench shifts that dynamic. But can Boston stick with this long term and is it realistic to pay a reserve over $31 million? The Celtics may be the one contending team who can afford to do so.
Boston’s next six games should allow them to continue excelling, then they’ll hit a harder stretch again so taking these lower tier teams to task is important to gaining ground on the Conference leaders.
Aron Baynes (ankle) and Kyrie Irving (shoulder) both left the Knicks game early and therefore are questionable for Saturday.
The Bulls changed coaches with Jim Boylen taking over from the fired Fred Hoiberg but his debut resulted in a loss. Despite Lauri Markkanen being back with the team the Bulls are still severely short handed.
The Bulls have lost seven in a row and 11 of their last 12 games. In terms of production the Bulls rank 30th in offense and 20th defensively.
Bobby Portis (right knee – MCL sprain) and Kris Dunn (left knee – MCL sprain) are not expected back for the Celtics game. Nor is Denzel Valentine (reconstructive ankle surgery) who is expected to miss the entirety of the season

Generally teams will want to gain a win for their new head coach, but the Bulls will be tired having played the Thunder the night prior while the Celtics will be rested.
