Sunday, December 4th, the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets meet for the first of four scheduled matches. Brooklyn will host again on January 12th while Boston will host on February 1st and March 3rd.
This is the first meeting between the clubs since the Celtics swept them in the first round of the 2022 playoffs.
Both teams last played Friday with the Celtics falling 116-120 to the Heat in overtime while the Nets defeated the Raptors 114-105.
Boston holds the all-time advantage having won 134 times of the club’s 207 meetings, last year the teams played four times with the Celtics winning three of the four contests.

Someone other than the Bulls or Cavs finally beat the Celtics (called that one!) and all it took was Jimmy Butler returning to the lineup for the Heat to make Boston look beatable.
While the Celtics still got 10 more free throws than the Heat the refs must’ve taken what Bam Adebayo said to heart as he got as many free throws (9) as his team did in the loss Wednesday.
The game was forced to overtime on a hail-Mary 3-pointer by Jaylen Brown with 1.7 seconds remaining en route to his 37-point night.
Brown registered a double-double adding 14 rebounds as did teammate Jayson Tatum with 14 points and 12 rebounds on a cold shooting night (5 of 18).
Boston’s offense is on another level ranking first across the board averaging 121.9 points, 49.8% from the field, and 40.8% from deep.
They’re improving defensively with Robert Williams closing in on a return to bolster their averages of opponent scoring 113.3 points (15th), 47.1% field goal shooting (17th), and 35.6% from the perimeter (16th).
Marcus Smart (hip) is questionable. Robert Williams III (knee) and Danilo Gallinari (knee) are out indefinitely.
Brooklyn Nets
Okay – so bear with me on this. Sure the Nets looked great as they jumped on the Raptors Friday posting a 41-17 first quarter and building the lead to as much as 36 points.
But… they lost all three remaining quarters and were scrambling late in the final frame needing both Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant on the court to ensure the win.
While the Raptors have their own issues (first-quarter starts – gasp) they also gifted other teams with the template on how you stop the Nets which is to double up on Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and force the ball out of their hands.
Late in that match, it was a series of turnovers and messy offense because no one else is capable of handling the ball. Well – Ben Simmons can but he was out injured and even if he plays, he won’t want to be the guy tasked with scoring (because of the free throw issues).
Granted KD is playing incredibly and can win a game on his own, but I’m just not convinced he can do that over seven times in four separate series.
Brooklyn allows 110.6 points per game ranking ninth and possesses the top ranking for opponent field goal percentage – 44.4%. Their perimeter defense is another story as foes shoot 37.6% from deep ranking 27th overall.
Brooklyn scores 111.6 points per game (18th). They own the third-best field goal percentage, shooting 49.6%, and rank eighth on the perimeter (37.4%).
Alondes Williams (adductor) and Edmond Sumner (gluteus) are out Sunday. Ben Simmons (calf), and Yuta Watanabe (hamstring) are out indefinitely.

Those factors alone provide the inspiration for KD and his Nets, however, this Celtics squad is no joke and while Brooklyn’s defense is improved they’re about to realize it’s bolstered by the series of easier opponents they’ve faced.
And, while it’s the lethal Celtics’ offense propelling them to the head of the East I suspect we’ll see a greater defensive intensity in this contest as the Bean Town crew look to send a message!
