Wednesday, November 16th, finds the Boston Celtics facing the Atlanta Hawks in the first of three meetings this season. Atlanta will host again on March 11th while Boston will play host on April 9th.
Both teams last played Monday with the Celtics storming back to defeat the suddenly offensively gifted Thunder 126-122 while the Hawks got payback on the Bucks 121-106.
Last season the clubs played four times splitting the series with two wins each. All-time the Celtics have the winning advantage having defeated the Hawks on 239 of the 386 occasions the teams have played.
Boston Celtics
Ironically, the Hawks’ defeat of the Bucks allowed Boston to push ahead of Milwaulkee to sit atop the East’s ladder. As it was, Boston was fortunate to land there because the Thunder led for the majority of their Monday night match.
Boston didn’t take the lead until 5:21 of the final frame and needed a strong clutch time performance as the teams leveled the match a further three times in that five-minute stretch.
While Jayson Tatum led the Celtics it was veteran Marcus Smart who was the difference in clutch time as he scored (9 points) or assisted on all but one scoring play in that critical segment.
Six Celtics scored in double-figures with two double-doubles delivered by Tatum (27 points, 10 rebounds) and Al Horford (12 points, 11 rebounds).
The other double-digit contributors were Jaylen Brown (26 points), Marcus Smart (22 points, 8 assists), Derrick White (16), and Payton Pritchard (10).
Boston is riding the longest win streak of the season and will look to extend it to eight games. Statistically, the Celtics score the most points per game (120) while shooting 48.4% (tied 2nd) from the field and 38.2% from the perimeter (4th).
Defensively, Boston has work to do allowing 114.1 points per game (19th) while opponents shoot 46.2% from the field (14th) and 36.2% from the perimeter (20th).
Malcolm Brogdon (hamstring) is questionable for Wednesday. Robert Williams III (knee) and Danilo Gallinari (ACL) are out indefinitely.
Atlanta Hawks
Of the Hawks’ nine victories, five occurred versus teams with losing records, one versus a .500 team (Philly), plus the Pelicans who only recently edged into a winning position.
The other two were their most impressive victories this season — both against the Bucks. Notably, in a scheduling oddity, Atlanta has already played Milwaukee three times in 14 games and will finish the season series on January 11th.
Trae Young missed the initial meeting and while the two victories were impressive there might be an asterisk beside them since Jrue Holiday was out Monday while Khris Middleton and Pat Connaughton missed all three contests so not close to the Bucks’ best lineup.
Offensively, Atlanta is averaging 115.6 points per game which ranks 10th while shooting 46.6% from the field (18th), and continues to struggle from the perimeter shooting 33.0% which ranks 26th!
Defensively, Atlanta allows 116.1 points per game (16th) while opponents shoot 45.2% from the field (tied 6th) and 32.0% from the perimeter (2nd).
Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Celtics are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Hawks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 6 of Boston’s last 8 games.
- Atlanta is 5-2 SU in their last 7 games.
Free Boston Celtics vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
Typically 20 games are required to fully suss out where a team is positioned. This season that fact is even more relevant given how jumbled the leaderboard is. Ten teams in both conferences have between six and nine wins making it far more difficult to isolate the upper echelon from the pack.
This matchup features two of the top three Eastern teams but the Hawks as noted above have acquired most of their wins against lower-tier seeds so this contest may reveal some greater clarity on whether they are an upper-tier squad or belong in that middle pack.
The Celtics while sputtering defensively is still clearly in the upper tier and will only improve once Robert Williams returns which is one of many reasons why I’m picking them to win this game.
