Thursday, October 28th finds Southeast division foes the Atlanta Hawks facing the Washington Wizards for the first time this season. Both clubs enter on the second game of a back-to-back, Atlanta beat the Pelicans and the Wizards beat the Celtics on Wednesday.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Hawks winning all three contests. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 159 of their 308 matches.
Given how deep this Hawks roster is it’s surprising they aren’t 3-1 especially since their lone loss came against the Cavaliers.
While Trae Young is the player who gets the shine the standout in my opinion of the early season is the play of DeAndre Hunter and Cam Reddish.
These are two rising stars on the team and another reason why I refer to this team as having one of the deepest most versatile rosters in the Association.
That’s a good news, bad news situation — the good news is obvious as the depth of this roster offers Nate McMillan with so much versatility. Few teams can counter all the different lineups the Hawks can feature.
For example, the depth of the Hawks allows McMillan the option of the typical starting/clutch group but he can switch to a small ball unit, a lengthier group, primarily 3-point shooters, or even a defensive-oriented lineup.
Other teams recognized for having deep rosters are the Lakers, Warriors, Heat, and Bucks but not one of those teams can counter all five variations of the Hawks. The clear advantage is Atlanta can serve up a mismatch no matter who they play.
Lou Williams (ankle) is questionable while Onyeka Okongwu (shoulder) is out indefinitely.
The Wizards will enter this match boasting an identical record to the Hawks having defeated the Boston Celtics and gaining yet another victory. Through the early season, Washington has demonstrated the moves they made in the offseason made them more versatile.
They’ve been dealing with different players being out of the lineup due to injury whether it was cornerstone Bradley Beal (in a game they went on to win) or longer-term maladies such as Thomas Bryant.
While the trade of Russell Westbrook was hailed as a big addition to the Lakers the reality is the pieces sent in return gave the Wizards the depth they desperately needed.
I’ve mentioned it prior but watching Montrezl Harrell in the Wizards system is night and day compared to how he looked with the Lakers last season. It’s more reminiscent of how he fit the Clippers and it’s paying dividends for Washington.
Harrell was the hero in the win versus Boston delivering a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds but the Wizards lost Daniel Gafford due to a quad contusion.
Raul Neto (shoulder), Thomas Bryant (knee), Rui Hachimura (personal), Anthony Gill (calf) are all questionable for this match and it’s likely Gafford joins that list.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Hawks are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Wizards are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
- The Hawks are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Wizards are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone under in 10 of Atlanta’s last 14 games.
- The Wizards are 7-1 SU in their last 8 games at home.
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
While everyone expects the Hawks to be in this position the Wizards are the surprise team in the East. I like the Wizards to surprise the Hawks except with Gafford going down and Bryant already uncertain it leaves Washington too thin up front.
