On Thursday, March 11th, the Atlanta Hawks meet the Toronto Raptors for the second time this season. In the initial meeting on February 6th, the Hawks won 132-121 ending a ten-game win streak by the Raptors.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Raptors taking all three games. The Raptors hold the all-time record having won 47 matches of the 93 played.
The Hawks entered the break having won their last two matches against the Heat and Magic. Both victories were with interim head coach Nate McMillan at the helm after Travis Schlenk fired Lloyd Pierce.
The timing of Pierce’s release felt unfair given how many injuries the Hawks have navigated this season and Bogdan Bogdanovic was returning to the court after missing the past 25 games.
As it turns out each of Trae Young, John Collins, and Cam Reddish had met with the brain trust to complain about Pierce and wanted a new voice in charge.
As for Bogdanovic, the Hawks are easing him back and through the two games he appeared, he averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 18.1 minutes. His typically effective 3-point shot is still not in rhythm with the youngster shooting 22.2 percent on 4.5 attempts.
Reddish (Achilles) missed the last six games and is out Thursday. Kris Dunn (knee) hasn’t played this season but a late March return is expected. Additionally, De’Andre Hunter suffered an articular tear in his right knee and won’t return until April.
No team was more in need of the All-Star break than the Toronto Raptors who were devastated by COVID-19 as Nick Nurse and five of his coaches were all out after one tested positive for the virus.
Following this news, five players were impacted as each of Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Malachi Flynn, and Patrick McCaw were quarantined.
The NBA injury report lists all five out for this game so the presumption is they all tested positive since they’ve been out of action over a week which is longer than necessary for contact tracing.
In the final week of the first half, the NBA didn’t help matters by moving the Raptors Tuesday match versus the Pistons from Tuesday to Wednesday which meant they’d be playing the rested Boston Celtics on the second game of a back-to-back set.
For what it’s worth that was an odd call by the league especially considering it helped two divisional rivals since the Knicks also played the Pistons holding the rest advantage.
Kyle Lowry and Norman Powell attempted to defy the odds in Boston with Lowry posting a career-best 19 assists prior to falling 125-132 to Boston.
Terence Davis is questionable after injuring his ankle in Boston.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 9-1 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Raptors are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Since all five Raptors and possibly Davis are out the Raptors will be forced to rely on five players who get consistent minutes to outplay a mostly complete Hawks squad which is a stretch.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Hawks ATS
Without the core Raptors contributors Lowry, Powell, and Boucher will need to be otherworldly and while that’s not totally inconceivable it’s unlikely
