On Wednesday, January 13th, the Atlanta Hawks face the Phoenix Suns for the first time in this 2020-21 campaign.
The Phoenix Suns hold the all-time record between the squads with 73 victories in 130 meetings. Last season these clubs met twice with the teams each winning one contest.
Atlanta Hawks
Travis Schlenk made sweeping changes to the Hawks roster this offseason to appease Trae Young’s demands and so the team could return to being a perennial playoff squad.
Yet through 10 games, the Hawks have a .500 record, the two foundational stars aren’t seeing eye to eye, and injuries are making a palpable impact.
While the tension between John Collins and Trae Young gets played out publicly the more concerning issue is the injuries and specifically who is injured.
The good news is Onyka Okongwu should make his season debut on Wednesday (or shortly after).
Danilo Gallinari and Rajon Rondo were expected to return mid-month but the new report shifts their return date to month-end.
Worse, a weird accident with a player stepping on Bogdan Bogdanovic caused a small knee fracture and bone bruise that will keep him off the court indefinitely.
While the absence of Gallo and Bogie ties directly to improving the offense arguably the more concerning issue is the absence of Kris Dunn (knee surgery) and Rondo because of their defensive prowess.
Atlanta will still put points on the board but until they improve defensively they won’t take a step and that system will need time to forge.
Phoenix Suns
A little over a week ago the Suns were competing to own a 6-1 record but lost to the Clippers and since then have gone 2-3 and needed a concerted fourth-quarter effort to win the Pacers contest.
The good news is they are finding a way to win close games, especially on the road. Of all the young teams who started the year strong, the Suns appear to have the staying power to go the distance.
That said, in their most recent game they suffered their worst loss (107-128) of the season. That the defeat came at the hands of the Washington Wizards without Russell Westbrook or Thomas Bryant available speaks to perhaps the club being fatigued.
In the loss, the All-Star backcourt tried to carry the load but it wasn’t enough. Devin Booker scored 33 points while Chris Paul posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 assists. Malik Bridges (14), and Dario Saric (13) were the other double-figure contributors.
Cameron Payne missed the last two games with a right ankle sprain and is doubtful for Wednesday. Jalen Smith remains out addressing the league health and safety rules and won’t play against the Hawks.
NBA Betting Trends:
- PHO are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 home games.
- Underdog is 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
- Under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
This match will prove a lot about who this Suns squad are and whether they are a team to be taken seriously. Look for Chris Paul to have them focused to respond to the blowout loss.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Bet the under
Recently the Suns have engaged teams scoring more points, but they were at their best early in the season when they committed to an aggressive defense. Monty Williams will remind them of that fact and my guess is the score will fall well below the over/under.
