Thursday, December 23rd, finds the Atlanta Hawks facing the Philadelphia 76ers for the third and final time this season. The 76ers won both prior matches on October 30th (122-94) and December 3rd (98-96).
The Hawks are playing a back-to-back set losing to Orlando (98-104) Wednesday while the 76ers beat Boston (108-103) Monday.
Atlanta Hawks
Fans at the Mecca likely won’t get the opportunity to witness Trae Young gesturing to the fans to be quiet on Christmas Day (or boo him for that gesture) since he’s in the NBA health and safety protocols.
Young entered on December 19th which means he’d either have to produce two negative PCR tests within 24 hours or stay quarantined for 10 days (December 29th).
With the loss to the severely undermanned Magic who had to sign six players to hardship contracts the wheels of the Hawks engine have officially come off.
Through the last 10 games Atlanta has three wins — all on the road and have lost seven in a row at State Farm Arena. Suffice to say the fact Atlanta will play eight of their next nine games on the road is probably receiving cheers in the Atlanta locker room.
As deep as the Hawks are their struggles punctuate how getting everyone touches and staying in rhythm isn’t always easy.
The Hawks still celebrate dynamic offensive sets and wins as if they’ve just won the title and frankly opponents don’t appreciate overt gestures to rub those moments in their faces especially by an 11th seeded team.
While the offense ranks third it’s the other side of the floor where their greatest struggles are occurring with them ranking 25th defensively. Part of it is effort as they don’t turnover opponents (ranked 29th with 12.5 per game).
Moreover, they rank 21st in both opponent points on the fast break and in the paint.
In the loss, Cam Reddish led with a season-best 36 points while John Collins regisitered a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Bogdan Bogdanovic returned after missing eight games.
Six Hawks are in health and safety protocols including Young, Clint Capela, Danilo Gallinari, Kevin Huerter, Lou Williams, and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot. DeAndre Hunter (wrist) is out indefinitely while Solomon Hill (hamstring) is out for the season.
Philadelphia 76ers
While most of the games that were postponed were tied to missing players observing the health and safety protocols in the case of the 76ers it was more about the players’ nursing injures.
That said, Danny Green joined Andre Drummond, Shake Milton, and Georges Niang as player in in the health and safety protocols. Sunday’s postponement however was tied to the numerous injured Sixers that made it impossible to dress eight players.
Philly had enough players for Monday and most importantly had their star sufficiently recovered from a sore ankle to suit up. Embiid served up an impressive double-double performance including 41 points and 10 rebounds plus five assists, two steals, and four blocks.
The big man took over in clutch time with no one on the Celtics capable of stopping him. Seth Curry offered 26 points and seven assists while Tobias Harris provided 25 points and seven rebounds.
They needed all three starters to perform as the 76ers decimated bench scored a single point.
Thursday, the 76ers list Furkan Korkmaz (illness) and Tyrese Maxey (quad) as probable to return while Jaden Springer (concussion) is questionable. Grant Riller (shoulder) is out indefinitely and Ben Simmons reamains out under suspension.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The 76ers are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- The 76ers are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- Over Under is 3-7 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Although the Hawks perform better on the road the recent rash of players testing positive has decimated their depth and the 76ers are getting healthier so I’m leaning to Philly taking this match and covering the spread.
