Wednesday, January 25th, finds the Atlanta Hawks facing the OKC Thunder for the second and final time this season. The Thunder won the first meeting 121-114 on December 5th.
The Hawks last played Monday losing 100-111 to the Bulls while Thunder played Sunday beating the shorthanded Nuggets 101-99.
In history, the teams have each won 70 times so this match will give the all-time edge to one club out of their 141 matches played. Last season the teams played twice with the Hawks winning both contests.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, Tuesday evening, January 24th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, January 25th.
Atlanta Hawks
Streaky might be the best way to describe the Hawks this season. On six occasions they’ve lost between two and four games in a row and have an equal six occasions of two to five-game winning streaks.
They were struggling recently losing six of eight but then went on a five-game win streak but enter this match having lost two in a row to the Hornets and Bulls.
The big change during the win streak was Trae Young accepting to play more off-ball especially when Dejounte Murray was rolling (which he was during the streak).
Clint Capela was also back after missing 14 of 16 matches and providing Young with his favorite pick-and-roll partner.
Stats
Atlanta ranks 10th in scoring, averaging 115.6 points per game while they shoot 47.6%, from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking 12th and 24th respectively
Also, on defense, opponents score 116.2 points ranking 21st while foes register 47.4% field goal percentage and 34.3% perimeter percentage ranking 18th and third respectively.
De’Andre Hunter (asthma) and Onyeka Okongwu (hamstring) are questionable for Wednesday.
OKC Thunder
Adding to his clutch time prowess Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered yet another game-winner against the Nuggets. And while Denver didn’t have Nikola Jokic or Michael Porter Jr., it was still an impressive win for the young club.
It ended the Nuggets’ nine-game streak and 16 consecutive home win streak. OKC has won seven of their last nine matches including some impressive wins versus elite teams and moved back into range of the play-in seeds.
Stats
OKC allows 115.5 points per game ranking 19th. They allow opponents to shoot 46.3% from the field and 35.4% from deep which ranks ranking fifth and 10th respectively.
On the positive side, the Thunder scores 116.6 points per game which rank eighth overall. So far, in terms of shooting efficiency, they rank 20th from the field shooting 46.6%, and 16th from the perimeter shooting 35.8%.
At this time, Ousmane Dieng (wrist) and Eugene Omoruyi (back) are questionable for Wednesday. Aleksej Pokusevski (leg), and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (ankle) are out. Chet Holmgren, (foot surgery) will miss the entire season.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. OKC Thunder NBA Prediction:
This matchup is all about the backcourts. Atlanta has been clicking lately and Dejounte Murray is shooting lights out. ‘
But, the Hawks guards struggle to defend versatile (or lengthy) guards which is precisely what the Thunder serve up via the 6’8 Josh Giddey and All-Star-worthy 6’6 Shai Gilegeous-Alexander who are in a groove and causing oppositions fits.
I like the Thunder to win and cover.
