The Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks tip off the Christmas Day five-game menu to renew the rivalry that began during the 2021 playoffs. It’s their second meeting this season with the Knicks winning the initial meeting on November 27th (97-90).
The teams will play twice more this season in Atlanta on January 15th and in New York on March 22nd.
Both teams last played on Thursday with the Knicks falling 117-124 to the Wizards while the Hawks split a back-to-back set losing to the Magic (98-104) versus the Magic Wednesday and beating the 76ers (98-96) on Thursday.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Knicks taking all three contests and on a current five-game winning streak versus Atlanta. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Knicks in 197 of their 381 matches.
Atlanta Hawks
The big question is whether Trae Young will be able to shush fans at MSG in person or have to suffice with doing it toward his TV in quarantine.
He’s been active on social media stating he hopes to be able to play but for that to occur he’ll need two negative PCR tests in a 24-hour period. If not he’ll remain in quarantine at least three days after Christmas since he was first diagnosed on December 19th.
Others in protocols are Danilo Gallinari and Clint Capela (both entered Dec. 21st), the trio from Dec. 22nd: Kevin Huerter, Lou Williams, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot. and after the match Thursday Sharife Cooper.
Despite missing so many members of their core the Hawks won a nailbiter versus the 76ers. Although Cam Reddish exited early after tweaking his ankle he scored 18 points prior which was the team-high.
Two-way contracted Skylar Mays delivered a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. John Collins (17), Bogdan Bogdanovic (15), Onyeka Okongwu (13), and Gorgui Dieng (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Atlanta ranks third offensively (112.4) but is 24th defensively (111.0) and while they are deep clearly they need to find a balance between the two sides of the hardwood.
DeAndre Hunter (wrist) is out indefinitely while Solomon Hill (hamstring) is out for the season.
New York Knicks
While the Knicks got a trio of players back from protocols (RJ Barrett, Obi Toppin, and Quentin Grimes) only Toppin got any playing time on Thursday and four Knicks remain in quarantine
Kemba Walker got another start and delivered with 44 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists but it wasn’t enough for New York to net the victory which might be why Tom Thibodeau is bemoaning the loss of Rose.
Julius Randle offered 23 points with nine rebounds and Alec Burks scored 20 as the other double-figure contributor. The Knicks picked up Danuel House on a 10-day hardship exception contract after the Rockets waived him.
The Knicks ranks 15th offensively (109.2) and just ahead of the Hawks defensively (23rd – 110.9)
The quartet still in quarantine are Kevin Knox, Immanuel Quickley, Miles McBride, and Nerlens Noel. Derrick Rose had ankle surgery and will be re-evaluated in eight weeks.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Hawks are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- The Knicks are are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Atlanta’s last 6 games.
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks NBA Prediction
Typically the first game on the Christmas Day slate features a slower start with players unaccustomed to playing at noon. With these two clubs that scenario could be amplified given the Knicks are 3-9 in their last 12 and the Hawks are 4-7 in their last 11.
All four Hawks wins occurred on the road while the last time New York beat a team with a record at or above .500 was the 76ers (16-16) on November 7th.
If the new six day quarantine is passed theorthetically Young might play but how effective would he be? Conversely, can the MSG crowd become the Sixth man to will their Knicks to victory? I’m not feeling either club regardless of who plays
