It’s a new era for the Hawks, but how much does the coaching change from Lloyd Pierce to Nate McMillan help Atlanta? The team had gone 3-7 over their last 10, so a shakeup can’t hurt.
The Heat are on the other side of that spectrum, showing stability behind Erik Spoelstra and currently riding a six game win streak. This one would look like Miami easily, but the line is a bit late coming out.
Atlanta Hawks
Pierce’s time had come. The Hawks are just 14-20 on the year which includes a 6-11 record on the road. The team had failed to cover the number in four straight road games, and have dropped 3 of the last 4.
This contest is a rematch of Sunday’s game though, one which Miami won 109-99 as just -2.5 home favorites. 99 points isn’t great for Atlanta though, even though they rank just 14th in scoring with 113.1 ppg.
Atlanta hadn’t be held to under 100 points since a 13 point loss to the Jazz on February 4th. Miami held Trae Young to 15 points on 3-14 shooting from the field, but John Collins went for 34 and 10 vs. the Heat front court.
It all comes down to how the heat respond to McMillan. The veteran coached the Pacers last season, and ran a slow, defensive oriented pace. Atlanta was 24th defensively under Pierce, and way down at 18th in tempo.
Miami Heat
Miami has to avoid getting complacent as they head into Tuesday’s tilt on a six game win streak. That run contains victories over the Raptors, Jazz, and Lakers so the Hawks with a new coach isn’t exactly a ‘get-up’ game.
The Heat have a visit to the Pelicans on Thursday before shutting things down for the all-star break. Miami has played the trademark Spoelstra defense in holding 5 of the last 6 opponents to 100 or less. Tuesday’s total should be low.
One thing about the Heat’s win over the Hawks on Sunday is that Miami did it without Jimmy Butler, who is on the questionable train with a hip injury. Tyler Herro didn’t play either, and he is also questionable for the rematch.
With just a visit to New Orleans on Thursday waiting on the schedule, there’s really no reason for Miami to play their walking wounded in this tilt. Goran Dragic and Kendrick Nunn are great fill-ins, but that kills the bench depth for the Heat.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Hawks are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall
- Hawks are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games
- Over is 10-2 in Hawks last 12 overall
- Heat are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall
- Hawks are 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
The line is late coming out for this game because oddsmakers don’t know who is playing for the Heat. That’s good though, because Atlanta has revenge on their mind. The Hawks will run a bare bones playbook with a new coach – but that’s good.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Hawks Plus Points
McMillan has more credibility than Pierce. You can’t teach defense in a day to Atlanta, but you also can’t Miyagi Heal the Heat players who should all sit out this game.
