Sunday, January 9th finds the Atlanta Hawks facing the LA Clippers in their first meeting this season. The teams will play once more in Atlanta on March 11th.
The Clippers are playing a back-to-back set having lost 108-123 to the Grizzlies on the front side Saturday while the Hawks played the Lakers in a 118-134 losing effort on Friday.
Atlanta Hawks
While Trae Young is definitely an offensive star I find it hard to earmark him as one of the league’s top players because he’s a one-way player and partially because his actions always seem focused on personal ahead of the team.
Young clearly covets stardom, and while he embraces playing the villain which can be fun, he also says things that undermine his own teammates and isn’t cool.
For example, after losing to the Blazers he said “we’ll we’ve improved over last season”. Lloyd Pierce lost his job over their start last season and this comment seems to imply he’d be fine with another change (ie: Nate McMillan) at the helm.
As a reminder, McMillan got buy-in from Young to make an effort defensively and to pass the ball more instead of only calling his own number (something Young did especially in nationally televised games).
After his playoff success, he’s not even trying on defense and perhaps that’s why his teammates have stopped doing all the dirty work fed up with Young being the one reaping all the rewards and shine.
Consider his postgame comments following the loss to LA regarding defense:
“It’s not necessarily a skill too much. It’s more about effort and your want, and a lot of it is game plan. Those two things go hand in hand, and I think we’ve got to do better on both of them.”
Since Young makes ZERO defensive effort, he’s calling out his teammates but the real gut punch is saying defense isn’t a skill. The equivalent would be DeAndre Hunter saying shooting 3-pointers isn’t a skill it’s just what guys who are scared to get hit rely on.
In the loss to LA, Young led with 25 points and 14 assists while John Collins (21) and Bogdan Bogdanovic (15) were back after missing five and four games respectively.
Cameron Oliver | Gorgui Dieng (protocols) are questionable with DeAndre Hunter (wrist) and Solomon Hill (hamstring) are out.
LA Clippers
In the match versus the Grizzlies, the Clippers like all Memphis opponents fell prey to arguably the hottest team in the association. Marcus Morris Sr. led the way for LA with 29 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.
Reggie Jackson registered 18 points on an inefficient 5 of 15 from the field while Brandon Boston Jr. scored 13 as the other double-figure scorer.
Ivica Zubac returned from a four-game absence in health and safety protocols registering eight points, seven rebounds, and a block.
While the Clippers are missing Paul George the Grizzlies were missing Steven Adams, Ja Morant, head coach Tayler Jenkins and lost Dillon Brooks early to an ankle sprain so theoretically LA should’ve had the advantage.
Luke Kennard (quarantine) and Jason Preston (foot) are questionable to play on Sunday as they progress through protocols. Isaiah Hartenstein (ankle) is out indefinitely. George (elbow) is out 3 to 4 weeks and Kawhi Leonard continues to work back from a torn ACL.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Clippers are 7-3 in the last 10 head to head
- The Clippers are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
LA is in free fall having lost nine of their last 12 matches and three in a row. The Hawks aren’t doing much better having lost seven of 10. Atlanta has more of their core healthy but I think the loss to the Grizzlies is going to motivate the Clippers to come out attacking knowing they won’t face much defensive opposition.
