Friday, November 12th finds the Atlanta Hawks tipping off versus the Denver Nuggets in their first meeting of the season.
The Hawks losing streak is now at five following the 98-110 loss to the Jazz on Tuesday while the Nuggets whether the Nikola Jokic one-game suspension defeating the Pacers on Wednesday.
The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggets in 51 of their 93 meetings. Last season the squads played twice with each team winning on their home court.
Atlanta Hawks
When teams make a sudden unexpected rise up the standings and find success lots of changes happen. First, their opponents spend much more time preparing to play them.
In some cases, the players on the roster also believe they have “earned” a certain respect that comes with winning but the reality is every team and every player has to earn it yearly.
I think it’s a combination of those things because they were playing better with numerous players out injured last season so theorthetically with DeAndre Hunter and Cam Reddish healthy they have more depth and should be more formidable.
Trae Young is still trying to figure out the new offensive rules and integrate the healthy players so everyone gets touches and is happy. He’s averaging 24.0 points (down from 25.3) and his free throw attempts are down from (8.7 to 5.3).
This could be arbitrary but part of the reason the Hawks improved last season was Nate McMillan talked to Young about sharing the ball more to build the team camaraderie. Young listened – taking three shots less and Atlanta benefitted.
This season he’s back to taking three extra shots which makes me wonder if he’s trying to make up for lost free throws. If you look at his stats by season you can see how he’s probably aiming to nab 25-30 points and 10 assists per year.
All I’m saying is it might be time for McMillan to sit down his star and have another talk with him and show him the evidence (two of Atlanta’s four wins came with Young taking fewer (16) than 20 shots.
Bogdan Bogdanovic (ankle) and DeAndre Hunter (wrist) are questionable for Friday. Onyeka Okongwu (shoulder) is out indefinitely
Denver Nuggets
Nikola Jokic served his one-game suspension for the incident versus Markieff Morris on Wednesday and his Nuggets buckled down to get the win versus Indiana.
This game had its own drama with the match tied in the final minute, Domantas Sabonis originally getting the benefit of a flop for a foul until the coach’s challenge changed things up and the Nuggets held on to get the win.
Five Nuggets scored in double-figures with Will Barton leading the way scoring 30 points along with six rebounds, there assists, and two steals.
Given the history of Michael Porter Jr. with his back, it’s not surprising the team taking a cautious approach to this most recent issue and has no return timeline. Jamal Murray (ACL) and Vlatko Cancar (hip) are both out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Hawks are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head
- The Hawks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- Over Under is 5-4-1 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
This has the potential to be another chippy game with the Hawks desperately needing a win and them knowing the refs will be quick to react if say Clint Capela elected to rile Nikola Jokic.
I’m not saying that will happen but watch to see if any of the Hawks look to poke Jokic hoping to gain an edge in the match. What they should do is play some defense — Atlanta has far too much talent and depth to rank 27th defensively.
Conversely, Denver is second defensively, 24th offensively. The difference here is Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. are both out and once they return the offense can be easily tweaked.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick:
Building strong defensive habits takes time so clearly, I’m taking the Nuggets because I simply don’t trust the Hawks to play defense for 48 minutes or Young to put the team ahead of himself.
