On Saturday, January 9th the Atlanta Hawks and the Charlotte Hornets will face each other for the second time in three days. In the first match, the Hornets won 102-94.
The Hawks hold the all-time record between the clubs with 64 wins in 120 meetings. Last season the teams played twice with Atlanta winning both games.
Atlanta Hawks
With the Hawks not feasting like teams expected with the upgrades to the depth, The Athletic added some fuel to the fire with a tweet citing John Collins and his disdain over how Trae Young runs the offense.
It’s not that surprising given the signs. When Young discussed wanting the franchise to add talent his references were all “I’ and “me” because he views this as his team.
Collins was considered a major part of the future core but the addition of Clint Capella and Danilo Gallinari served up questions regarding who was the reserve especially since Atlanta paid $61 million to Gallo for the next three years.
While they could view Gallo as a reserve that would make him a pretty pricey bench player but for the moment his injury makes it a moot point.
Yet, the most telling hint was the inability of Collins and Atlanta to nail down his rookie contract extension. Although the Hawks own his Bird rights not working out a contract for a perennial double-double guy implies where he fits in the pecking order.
In the loss, Collins produced a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds while Kevin Huerter (19) and De’Andre Hunter (17) were the other double-figure contributors.
Danilo Gallinari (ankle) is out until mid-January. Rajon Rondo (knee), Tony Snell (foot), Kris Dunn (knee), and Onyeka Okongwu (toe) are all out indefinitely.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets continued their trend of beating teams considered to be playoff-bound like the Mavericks, Nets, and now the Hawks.
Sure looks like Michael Jordan knew what he was doing when he went in hard to land Gordon Hayward in free agency. Considering his production it also seems like he’s playing to the level he was at prior to his injury.
Case in point, in his last season in Utah, Gordon registered 21.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists. and 1.0 steal. Through eight games with the Hornets, his stat line is 21.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists. and 1.5 steals.
Hayward bolstered those totals with the last match versus the Hawks when he dropped 44 points and seven rebounds. LaMelo Ball is also settling in delivering 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Terry Rozier (14) and Devonte Graham (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
Nick Richards (illness) is probable for Saturday. Cody Zeller (fractured hand) remains out until February while Grant Riller (knee) is out indefinitely.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Through the early season, these two games in three days at the same venue have tended to find each team winning one. That said there are clearly some issues internally with the Hawks and the Hornets are keen to return to the playoffs.
