The Temple Owls will travel to Orlando and take on the UCF Golden Knights from FBS Mortgage Stadium this Thursday night on ESPN2. Central Florida may open as double-digit favorites here.
HISTORY: This will mark the tenth time UCF and Temple face off, with the Golden Knights leading the all-time series 7-2.
Temple Owls
Temple has picked up a pair of wins but they’ve struggled versus FBS competition thus far. The Owls were shutout by Duke in Week 1, but responded by defeating Lafayette in their home opener. They hosted former Big East rival Rutgers, but ended up losing by two points. Temple shut out UMass in Week 4, but they were overwhelmed in their AAC opener last time out.
In Week 5, Temple lost to Memphis, 24-3, failing to capitalize on the 18-point underdog spread.
Temple is scoring 15.1 points per game, while allowing just 16.2 ppg.
E.J. Warner took over after Week 1, and his genes simply may have made Temple more competent instantly. E.J., the son of legendary Rams QB Kurt Warner, game-managed each of his first three starts well, but he was very rattled versus Memphis. The freshman quarterback threw a pair of touchdown passes in wins over Lafayette & UMass
Warner has thrown for 806 passing yards with five touchdowns to six interceptions through his first four games.
Darvon Hubbard and Edward Saydee haven’t had much room to run, but they’ve split the load early. Hubbard leads the Owls in rushing with 125 despite missing the Rutgers game, while Saydee has rushed for 119 yards in four games. NDSU transfer and backup QB Quincy Patterson has also contributed to ground game in designed packages, scoring a team-lead two rushing touchdowns.
Adonicas Sanders has been Warner’s go-to guy early. The Georgia Tech transfer caught eight balls versus Rutgers, and four passes for 101 yards and a score in the win over UMass. Sanders leads the team with 21 receptions for 293 receiving yards, while senior wideout Jose Barbon is tied for the team-lead with 21 catches.
UCF Golden Knights
Central Florida opened their season with a win over South Carolina State, but a Friday night loss to Louisville would follow. UCF then took the three-hour trip down to Boca Raton and beat in-state foe Florida Atlantic by 26 points. The Golden Knights picked up another non-conference win over Georgia Tech, before heading into their bye. They opened AAC play with a bang, despite a delay due to mother nature.
In Week 6, UCF defeated SMU, 41-19, improving to 4-1 against this spread this season.
Central Florida scores 35.6 points per game, while allowing 14.6 ppg.
John Rhys Plumlee has come over from Ole Miss and found a home here in Orlando. The senior quarterback tossed four touchdowns in his debut, and he totaled a career-high 460 yards (339 pass, 121 rush) in the win over Florida Atlantic. Plumlee has been killing teams with both his arm and legs, and should give a stingy Temple defense trouble after tossing for 316 against SMU.
Plumlee has thrown for 1,143 passing yards with seven touchdowns to three interceptions, while rushing for 431 yards and four touchdowns.
Isaiah Bowser and Johnny Richardson have split touches through the first month of the season. Bowser scored three times in win over the Mustangs, and he leads the backfield with 290 rushing yards. Richardson led the team in rushing last season, and he’s got 230 yards through five games
Javon Baker has been Plumlee’s number one guy after coming over from Alabama. The junior receiver has caught five passes or more in four of five games played, and he leads UCF with 395 receiving yards. Baker and senior wideout Ryan O’Keefe both surpassed the 100-yard mark versus SMU, with the latter catching a pair of touchdowns.

UCF looks like a real threat to win the AAC this season, while Temple may be competing with their in-state rival USF for doormat of the conference. While both teams have defended well early, there’s a big advantage at quarterback for the hosts here. Plumlee should be all-AAC this season if he keeps this up, while Warner’s name carries more value then his play right now. Central Florida should comfortably overpower Temple here in Disney World.
