The 2019 Sun Belt champion Mountaineers will open their season hosting the Charlotte 49ers at Kidd Brewer Stadium in North Carolina on Saturday, September 12th. Even though it’s the second week of the college football season neither of these teams has yet to play a game, so both squads come into this one fresh.
Charlotte 49ers
The 49ers reached their first bowl game in program history last season after finishing 7-6 under first-year head coach Will Healy. Charlotte won over five games for the first time since joining the FBS in 2015. The next step for Healy is to win a bowl game as he suffered a loss at the hands of Buffalo in early 2020.
A good thing for Charlotte is that they are returning a good amount of starters on the offensive side of the ball. Junior Chris Reynolds will back at starting QB for the 49ers. Reynolds threw for 2564 passing yards to go with his 22:11 touchdown to interception ratio.
Sadly for coach Healy’s squad, he lost lead wideout Ben Lemay due to graduation. Lemay totaled over 1300 yards receiving last season to go with 13 touchdowns in his senior year.

Defensively, the 49ers took a huge blow in the offseason losing the school’s all-time leading tackler and all-time sack leader in Jeff Gammell and Alex Highsmith. Gammell had over 304 tackles in his four years at Charlotte, while Highsmith racked up 47.0 sacks in four years in the program.
Appalachian State Mountaineers
This will be Shawn Clark’s first full season as the head coach of the Mountaineers as Erik Drinkwitz left to go to Missouri right before State’s bowl game. App State finished the season ranked 19th in the AP poll, but find themselves on the outside looking in to start the 2020 season.
Thankfully for Clark, he is returning starters on the offensive side of the ball. Six of them being offensive linemen who were among the best in the country according to advanced metrics. The Mountaineers were a top-10 team in the country in scoring averaging over 38 points per game.
Zac Thomas will be back under center for App State after a very impressive 2019. Thomas completed 225 of 359 passes for 2,718 yards with 28 touchdown passes against six interceptions last season. He can also get it done on the ground as he carried the ball 104 times for 440 yards and had seven touchdowns.
