The Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats will play each other twice within just 5 days of each other this week. The Labor Day Classic takes place on Monday in Hamilton and then they will run it back again at BMO Field in Toronto on Friday. It’s a big stretch for a Toronto team that had their last game against Edmonton postponed due to the Elks’ COVID outbreak.
Toronto Argonauts
The Argos picked up a win in their home opener on August 21st at BMO Field to improve their record to 2-1.The postponement of their game against the Edmonton Elks on August 26th means they haven’t played since. They will now have 2 games in 5 days, both against Hamilton.
The Argos kicked off the season by completing a comeback victory over Calgary 23-20. They then travelled to Winnipeg where they dropped a Week 2 game against the Blue Bombers 20-7. The Argos then avenged that loss in their home opener a week later.
The Argos will head into this one missing two members of their offensive line in Dariusz Bladek and Philip Blake, who are both on the COVID list. That will force the Argos to make some changes. Dylan Giffen and Shane Richards have been taking first team reps in practice.
Nick Arbuckle will be at the quarterback position for Toronto on Monday. It will be his second straight start for the Argos. He came in mid-way through Week 2’s game against the Bombers to replace McLeod Bethel-Thompson and appears to have a tentative hold on the starting spot.
Earlier this year, Arbuckle was released by Ottawa after the Redblacks signed Matt Nichols shortly after he was released by the Argos. The Argos then decided to sign Arbuckle, who has completed 33-51 for 406 yards in 3 games this season.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
The Tiger-Cats return home for the first time in 659 days to host the Labor Day Classic against their rivals from down the QEW.
The Tiger-Cats come into this one after handing Montreal a loss in their home opener. The Ticats struggled for offence in their first two games of the season but bounced back with Dane Evans back at the helm for a 27-10 victory against the Als in Week 4.
Starter Jeremiah Masoli is said to still be struggling with a rib injury and will give way to Evans again this week. Considering Evans led the Ticats to a Grey Cup appearance in 2019 after Masoli was lost to injury mid-way through the season, many Hamilton supporters are likely glad to see him back on the field for this one.
Head coach Orlondo Steinauer told the media this week that it will take both Evans and Masoli to accomplish their goals this year.
The last time the Labor Day Classic took place was in 2019. Evans was on the field for that one as well and completed 31-of-37 passes for 442 yards to help the Ticats on to victory. They’ve won the last 6 Labor Day games against their rivals from Toronto.
