The Montreal Alouettes started their season on a strong note with a strong road win over the Edmonton Elks. After finishing second in the East Division in 2019, the Alouettes will look to make the playoffs for just the second time in six years.
The Calgary Stampeders have gotten off to a rough start in 2021. They’ve fumbled a favorable three-game home stretch to start the season by dropping their first two contests. Calgary has been one of the best teams in the CFL over the previous decade, winning two Grey Cups during that span, so their due to get back on track soon.
Montreal Alouettes
The Montreal Alouettes defeated the Edmonton Elks to kick their 2021 season off. Montreal took a double-digit lead into halftime, and didn’t look back, winning the game 30-13. The defense kept the Elks out of the endzone for three quarters.
The offense is led by quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. The former Eastern Washington stud finished third in the CFL in passing during his first year starting with 3,942 yards, and second with 24 touchdowns. He opened the season in solid form, tossing 211 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win over Edmonton.
William Stanback leads the backfield after making his first CFL All-Star team in 2019. Stanback finished third in the league 1084 yards last season, and he turned 18 carries into an efficient 112 yards in the opener.
The Alouettes have a solid group of pass catchers. B.J. Cunningham led the team with five catchers and 86 yards in Week 1. Geno Lewis led the team in receiving in 2019 with 1,133 yards, and he caught three passes for 47 yards against the Elks.
Calgary Stampeders
The Calgary Stampeders struggled last week in their 15-9 home loss to the BC Lions. The offense couldn’t finish in the red zone and failed to score a touchdown through four quarters. They were torched through the air defensively for 342 yards.
Calgary will likely enter their third contest with a new starter for the first time in nearly eight years. 2x Grey Cup winner Bo Levi Mitchell is set to miss time with a broken leg, which will propel second-year quarterback Michael O’Connor into the lineup.
Mitchell admirably powered through with the injury, but a pair of timely interceptions haulted their comeback. O’Connor served as a backup for the Argonauts in 2019, and brings limited experience.
Former Arizona standout Kadeem Carey leads the backfield with 129 rushing yards through the first two games. Kamar Jorden and Josh Huff lead the team with eight catches apiece, with the former pacing the team with 153 yards.

4* Free CFL Betting Prediction: Montreal -7
The Calgary Stampeders may just start their season by dropping their third game at home. Entering with a first-time starter may bode well for the host, as the visitors enter with momentum. Look for the Alouettes to stifled Michael O’Connor in his first career start, and Vernon Adams Jr. to lead them to the victory. Back Montreal to win and cover the spread this Saturday.
