The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Montreal Alouettes will each play their first divisional matchup game against each other in Week 4. The Tiger-Cats are coming off a bye week last week and pretty mediocre outings in weeks 1 and 2. As for the Alouettes, they kicked off the 2021 season in Week 2 with a 30-13 victory over the Edmonton Elks.
In Week 2, Montreal’s late comeback was thwarted by the Calgary Stampeders, who held on for a 28-22 victory.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
It has been 647 days since the Hamilton Tiger-Cats won a regular season football game. Granted, these sorts of stretches can happen when an entire season gets snuffed out. Still, the club is likely hoping that long run ends in Week 4 against the Montreal Alouettes.
To do so, however, they are going to have to figure out how to score, something they were unable to do much of in weeks 1 and 2.
In their first two games this season, the Tiger-Cats have only managed to muster a meagre 14 points. To that end, Hamilton will turn to 27-year-old quarterback Dane Evans this week. Starting quarterback Jeremiah Masoli is said to be dealing with sore ribs. The last time Evans filled in for an injured Masoli, however, was Week 7 of the 2019 season.
Masoli was out for the year with a torn ACL, and all Davis managed to do was lead his team to the Grey Cup that year.
Also out for the Tiger-Cats in Week 4 will be defensive end Ja’Gared Davis. The 30-year-old is ineligible this week after breaking COVID-19 protocols.
Losing their first 3 would be rough for a team that only lost 3 games throughout the entire 2019 season. That is what the Ticats are trying to avoid here.
Montreal Alouettes
For the first time since being defeated by the Edmonton Elks in the 2019 CFL Playoffs, the Montreal Alouettes will play at home in front of their fans. It has been 671 days since the last regular season game was played in Montreal.
They come into the game leading the league in rushing and will be going up against the team that has had the least success of anyone guarding against the rush so far. This is a pivotal time for Montreal too. In 2019, they managed their 1st season above .500 since 2012. They appear to be knocking on the door of success for the first time since Anthony Calvillo retired.
Vernon Adams will make his 3rd consecutive start at QB. He currently ranks last amongst starters in completion percentage but 5th in QB rating. He might have extra motivation playing against Hamilton this week, considering they released him in 2018.
CFL Betting Trends:
- Tiger-Cats have won 8 of their last 11 against Montreal.
- Tiger-Cats have won 4 of their last 6 games coming off a bye week.
- Alouettes have won 5 of their last 5 when coming off of a loss.
- The Tiger-Cats have won 7 of their last 8 regular season games against eastern division opponents.
- Alouettes have lost 5 of their last 6 at home against Hamilton.
4* Free CFL Betting Prediction: Montreal -7
Unless the Tiger-Cats figure out how to score and defend against the rush for the first time in over 600 days, there is little reason to be confident they can beat Montreal in their home opener. The Alouettes will have a boisterous home crowd for this game that will be motivated to unnerve an already unnerved Hamilton side.
The game might come down to how Dane Evans performs. There will be some pressure on him, however, as his side looks to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2017. It feels like everything is trending toward an Alouettes victory here.
