NCAA Football Free Picks 2007 – Virginia Tech vs LSU
Virginia Tech Hokies (9) vs. LSU Tigers (2)
Saturday, September 8th — Tiger Stadium, LSU — 9:15pm EST
Opening NCAA Football Line: LSU -10.5 (37.5)
Two top-10 teams will clash in prime time when the Virginia Tech Hokies travel southwards to Louisiana to take on the LSU Tigers. Virginia Tech was able to slug through a poorly played performance in their season opener on their way to victory. Against LSU they will have to be sharp from kick-off, or the Tigers will tear them to shreds.
Virginia Tech Offense vs. LSU Defense
The Tiger’s defense forced seven turnovers in their season opener, including six interceptions. They are simply dominant. While Virginia Tech offers a steady offense behind quarterback Sean Glennon, he will struggle to find Sam Wheeler, his favorite receiving target, against a well trained and opportunistic LSU secondary.
Tailback Branden Ore simply lacks the game breaking ability to get outside against LSU’s vicious front line. Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey is going to wreak havoc in the backfield all day, making the likelihood of Ore being able to affect the game slim to none.
Expect Bo Pelini’s ferociously aggressive defense to keep the Hokies at bay, as the Hokies still try to find their footing after a rough performance in the season opener. It certainly doesn’t help that Glennon is on the hot seat with Ike Whitaker looming over his shoulder. You can bet that Glennon will force some errors as he tries to preserve his job.
LSU Offense vs. Virginia Tech Defense
Fifth year quarterback Matt Flynn was not sensational in his premier as a starter, but he was surely flawless. Early Doucet, his top receiver, raked in nine receptions for 78 yards and a score and will be a prime target for Flynn. The problem with LSU’s offensive performance in the season opener was that it was conservative, and that is no way to play against Tech – which held opponents to 219.5 yards and 11 points per game.
Tech has many of its starters back and will use the front seven to swarm the ball carrier, making the run a difficult thing for LSU to establish. LSU will have to use sophomore standout Keiland Williams to spell Jacob Hester. The tailback tandem will have to burden a heavy workload as LSU tries to take the pressure off of Flynn to win the ball game.
NCAA Football Betting Trends
-total has gone UNDER in Virginia Tech’s last 7 games.
-Virginia Tech is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 games on road.
-LSU is 6-3 ATS in it last 9 home games.
-LSU is 0-1 ATS this season.
When two of the best defensive programs in the NCAA butt heads, you can be certain to bet safely in the UNDER.
Matt Flynn is an unproven commodity and Virginia Tech is absurdly strong against the run game. Likewise, LSU is extremely tough to score on defensively and have playmakers in the secondary that can turn mistakes into points on the board.
The defenses essentially will make it difficult for either offense to score, but LSU’s offense is much more well rounded. They have three tailbacks they can lean on to keep their runners fresh, and Flynn, though untested, is reliable enough to avoid mistakes.
Look for LSU’s secondary to take advantage of Glennon’s mistakes as he breaks under the pressure of keeping his starting job, and bearing the hopes of a school that is in desperate need of it. Expect the home team to win, but the Hokies defense keeps the score tight.
