It was no doubt a gallant effort last time out for Rhode Island, but the Rams went down at home to Xavier, which means URI is still lacking significant wins on its schedule, save for an early-season triumph over Big East middler Syracuse. Sure, this is a revenger, with the Rams having lost 78-76 in a previous encounter, where URI shot an uncharacteristic 34% from the field.
But we’re not convinced Rhode Island has the defensive “chops” to effectively deal with a U-Mass attack that can legitimately generate some points (81.4 ppg on the road, which is sixth in the country). And the Minutemen have been in fine three-point form lately, making 12 shots from beyond the arc against Temple on Feb. 10 and 11 versus defensively-capable Saint Louis last time out on Sunday. U-Mass is anxious to post enough credentials to get a look from the NCAA selection committee when it comes time to comprise the brackets.
