Because of injuries to D’Angelo Hall, Nnamdi Asomugha, Michael Waddell and John Bowie, the Raiders will be going into this game with only four healthy cornerbacks. And things are at the point where Lane Kiffin brought in Adam Archuleta, safety, and is putting him at linebacker. That will be something inviting for the Tennessee quarterbacks, but the Oakland defensive front, which was one of the worst in football at stopping the run, is going to be challenged plenty.
Last week against St. Louis, Quinton Ganther had 115 yards rushing. Chris Johnson, the first-round draft pick, had a 66-yard touchdown scamper, as he flashed the speed that is going to make him a game-changer. Vince Young went off on a long run. All told, the Titans had 340 yards rushing, which is astronomical.
The Oakland QB’s encouraged with their play last week int he win over San Francisco. JaMarcus Russell got sacked and threw only five passes, but he didn’t make any stupid mistakes. Andrew Walter was 10-of-12 for 82 yards. Russell will play into the second quarter in this game, but Darren McFadden will not see action, perhaps not for the whole pre-season. Lots of rookie receivers to work with, and receiver wasn’t one of Oakland’s strengths to begin with.
Those rushing totals from last week indicate the Titans are really firing off the ball. Unless they really tone it down by design, they will overmatch an Oakland defense that has been desperately searching for help. We will lay the points with Tennessee, the five-point favorite in the Top Sportsbooks NFL pre-season betting odds.
JAY’S PLAY: TENNESSEE -5 *** (Graded on a scale of 1-4 stars)
