When the Titans and Jaguars get their season started in Jacksonville on Sunday, all eyes will be on the quarterbacks. Everyone will be watching Vince Young to see how he’ll avoid a sophomore slump and the dreaded Madden Curse. Additional scrutiny will be on David Garrard to see how he handles being the starter in Jacksonville. NFL betting experts and amateurs will be especially glued to the screen to see which way the two teams might be headed this season.
Young has a lot to live up to after leading the Titans to an 8-8 record in his rookie season. Repeating or bettering that record will be difficult though, after he lost some of his supporting cast. Gone are Young’s No. 1 receiver Drew Bennett and starting running back Travis Henry. To make matters worse the Titans did little or nothing to replace either of them. Young’s best target now is the unproven Brandon Jones, while LenDale White and Chris Brown are expected to share the rushing duties.
In Jacksonville the Jaguars have a punishing defense once again, but that could be meaningless if their offense doesn’t get in gear. Now that Byron Leftwich is gone, it will be up to Garrard to get the Jaguars back to the playoffs. The running game remains solid behind the duo of Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor, but the passing game is a question mark. Not only has Garrard been unreliable in the past, but his batch of receivers is void of a real No. 1. Matt Jones is the closest thing Garrard has to a go-to receiver, but he doesn’t match up to other No. 1 targets around the league.
If Garrard plays as badly as he did the last time he faced Tennessee as the Jags’ starter, Jacksonville is doomed for sure on Sunday. Last year in Week 15 the Jags and Titans faced off for the second time. Previously in Week 9, Jacksonville had crushed Tennessee 37-7 as a 9.5-point favorite on the NFL odds, with Garrard throwing three touchdown passes. Week 15 was a whole different story as Garrard basically threw away the game for the Jaguars. In that contest Jacksonville completely outplayed Tennessee, posting 396 yards of offense, while their defense held the Titans to only 98 total yards. Vince Young did nothing on the day as Jacksonville limited him to 8-of-15 passes for 85 yards with no touchdowns, and kept him to only four rushing yards on four carries.
Garrard messed up what should have been in easy win, throwing three interceptions and losing one fumble in the game. Two of Garrard’s interceptions were returned for touchdowns and his fumble was also returned for a 92-yard touchdown. Garrard’s turnovers amounted to 21 Tennessee points in a 24-17 loss. The Jags were a 4-point road favorite on the NFL odds chart in that game.
In their 2007 season opener, the Jaguars are a 6.5-point favorite with all their hopes for the game and likely their season resting on Garrard’s shoulders.
