The Tennessee Titans have gained a well-earned reputation as one of the more stable franchises in the NFL. They have one of the best head coaches in the league in Jeff Fisher, who is starting his 14th full year with the franchise – the longest current tenure of any NFL coach. At the start of the 2006 season, Tennessee was left for dead as it entered the season without Steve McNair, a raw rookie Vince Young set to hold a clipboard, and tired veteran Kerry Collins, well removed from his Super Bowl days, as the stop-gap at quarterback. When Collins struggled, Young got an early baptism under fire, and the wins slowly started to come. By the homestretch, Tennessee was a darkhorse in the wildcard race, finishing with an 8-8 record, and Young was named to the Pro Bowl.
Last season the Titans continued to evolve, coming in with a 10-6 record and qualifying for the playoffs. However, Young did not progress as expected under center. He completed 62% of his passes, which was eleven percentage points above his 2006 numbers, and threw just nine TD passes against 17 interceptions. His rushing numbers were way down as well, and he dealt with a quadriceps injury that bothered his movement. Vince Young without movement is like American Idol without Simon. Now people are wondering whether Young will ever really develop into a polished NFL passer, and how far the Titans can really get with him at the controls.
Norm Chow was fired, and new offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger was brought in, with the idea of adding another dimension to the Tennessee passing attack. But there were no genuine downfield threats added at the wide receiver spot. If the Titans want to continue throwing short passes and running the ball, however, they can get by. Alge Crumpler is probably the most accomplished addition at a skill position, and Tennessee took a shot in the first round with East Carolina running back Chris Johnson. He’s got some amazing speed, and Fisher and Heimerdinger would like to get a little “thunder & lightning” thing going with him and holdover running back LenDale White, who gained 1110 yards last season.
Tennessee is going to once again be bad news for opposing quarterbacks this season. Kyle Vanden Bosch is one of the better pass rushers in the league, and if newly-acquired defensive end Jevon Kearse works out, it will help offset the loss of Antwan Odom and Travis LaBoy, who had fourteen sacks between them. Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth can rush the QB too, but where he is truly valuable is against the run; when he was healthy, the Titans were one of the NFL’s toughest teams to run against. When he was out, they gave up generous yardage to opposing running backs.
On an all-around basis the defense is pretty solid. The big question is how far Young can stretch the field. he’s a winner, no doubt, but if he continues to be just an athlete playing quarterback, a Super Bowl berth is going to be out of reach. If he starts to harness his string arm in a more productive way, there is a chance to pull some playoff upsets and claw their way to the Big One.
