The Big 12 Report- Edition 1 – By: Tony George
NCAA Football Stats NCAA Football News NCAAF Previews NCAA Football Injury Reports
Some interesting non-conference happenings in the Big 12 conference the past 2 weeks in college football open up our 2007 edition of the Big 12 reports for this season. My record of 64% ATS or better in this conference in each of the past 6 seasons will be tested this season, as the South and North have plenty of parity in them, and the South looks to be the best division of the two of them as stated in my preseason breakdown. Lets breakdown and key in on a few of the teams that have my attention early on for this weeks upcoming action. The big showdown is still October 6th, when Texas plays Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout and Nebraska travels to Columbia Missouri to play the Tigers, in what should determine the Big 12 championship game unless the wheels fall off of the winners of those 2 games.
Oklahoma
Where I may have went wrong was with ranking Oklahoma behind both Texas and Texas AM, who have both looked very sluggish out of the gate this season. The big question mark in Norman was a starting QB, which I figure is pretty important in a BCS conference school slated to be a top 10 team in the nation. Those questions were unanswered heading into fall camp, but they are not in question any longer. Freshman Sam Bradford gas 568 yards and 8 TD’s on 2 games, and has found WR Malcolm Kelly his new best friend in the process! The offense is #5 in the nation in total yards and #2 in scoring early on, while the defense is ranked 13th in total yards and 16th in scoring allowed and 6th against the run. Granted North Texas is not a good team but Miami is respectable and a 51-13 trashing is impressive. The Sooners are rolling and have Utah State, Tulsa and Colorado before the big game with Texas. They are laying 46 points this weekend.
Iowa State
Raising some eyebrows in a bad way here. The Cyclones fired Dan McCartney last year and hired Gene Chizek from Texas to take over, and re-vamped their entire coaching staff. The situation has worsened with a record of 0-2 losing to Kent State by 9 and Northern Iowa by 11 at home. Iowa visits town this weekend, oh my how it gets worse in a hurry! The Cyclones are taking over the bottom spot in the Big 12 as the bottom feeder, thus graduating Baylor to an also ran, not good news for Cyclone fans. A prediction here, Iowa 35 Iowa State 7, and the Hawkeye’s are only 17 points favorites with the opening line!
Nebraska
I only mention the Huskers for 2 reasons here, as you all know they are my beloved team, since I lived in Lincoln for over 20 years before moving to Kansas City. The second reason is they take on #1 ranked USC this weekend in Lincoln after struggling with returning ACC champs Wake Forest this past weekend on the road. If it was not for a 2nd string QB for the Deacons making bad throws and a crucial interception in the end zone in the 4th quarter, Nebraska would be 1-1 heading into this game. QB Keller has performed better than average for Nebraska but missed tons of open WR’s this weekend on national TV for USC to watch and lick their chops. Wake also shut down RB Marlon Lucky on the ground, where NU ran all over a decent Nevada team in week 1 in a blowout win. Maybe they were looking ahead, but with Wake’s previous years success I doubt it. USC is a 10 point favorite in Lincoln this weekend. Can the Huskers pull off the biggest upset of the year, second only to Application State in Ann Arbor? I doubt it folks!
NOTES
Texas AM struggled against a so/so Fresno State team and won in 3 OT’s at home. They have a great offense and a patsy at home this week in UL Monroe, but they better get their defense shored up before opening conference play. Hats off to the Baylor Bears, they had a blowout win this past weekend, pounding Rice 42-17. The Bears new QB Szymanski has over 600 yards throwing the ball so far and they have Texas State on deck this week. Baylor will have a winning record after week 3, and while it is short lived success, the Bears may cover 2 in a row and have a winning record! The lost to a decent TCU team 27-0 in week 1, a respectable loss. Kansas continues to explode on offense with 2 blowout wins and the fun continues this week as they avenge a loss to Toledo from last year in a thriller, as they have them at home this week, and then Florida International the next week before traveling to Kansas State to open Big 12 play, when they should enter 4-0 and with some confidence. The Jayhawks are 11th in total yards on offense and 3rd in scoring in the nation averaging 57 ppg. This KU team has a solid QB in Todd Reesing and lost 4 games last year by 5 points or less including a double OT loss at Nebraska. Could they be the dark horse in the north? Time will tell when the schedule gets tougher.
I will have my weekly Big 12 Play of there week again this week as I opened the season with a loss as I laid the points with Nebraska this weekend and lost my opener. I will avenge that loss this weekend with a rock solid top play this weekend. The Big 12 is heating up and conference play is 2 weeks away, stay tuned folks!
