This will be the first game for the Bills in Toronto since making a $78 million deal to stage eight games there over the next five years, a deal that has some CFL loyalists so up in arms that they plan to picket the game.
Charlie Batch suffered a broken collarbone in the game against Philadelphia this past weekend, so the Steelers went out and signed Byron Leftwich, the former Jacksonville starter who has been looking for a job. Leftwich’s first practice with Pittsburgh was on Monday, but he will most likely see action with the team on Thursday. Elsewhere on the QB front, Ben Roethlisberger completed a couple of passes last week, while Dennis Dixon also got a baptism, completing six passes, but for only 30 yards.
Rashard Mendenhall looks like he is going to be a valuable addition (34 yards on seven carries vs. the Eagles), so we would expect him to proceed. But with nine first downs last Friday and some further experimentation at the quarterback spot, the Steelers might struggle to get some execution going.
That’s good news for the Bills defense, which allowed Washington quarterbacks Todd Collins and Jason Campbell to complete 15 of 21 passes for almost ten yards a completion, and allowed five yards a carry.
J.P. Losman looked sharp for the Bills last week in their loss to the Redskins, completing seven out of nine passes. Losman is not really in the running for the starting job, but he is taking the attitude that he is, which is a healthy thing. Don’t look for Marshawn Lynch to necessarily play an increased role, as he had only three carries against Washington and does not need to overwork himself as he is going to carry most of the load in the backfield in 2008.
The Bills may be especially pumped as this relationship with Toronto begins. But management may be more excited than the players. And after all, this is an exhibition. Honestly, I can see the trend continuing for the Steelers, who have played 11 of their last 13 pre-season games under the total. We’ll go in that direction, as the number is posted at __ points in the Top Sportsbooks NFL pre-season football betting odds.
