Hockey Wagering – Red Wings lead Stanley Cup List
Our Sportsbooks: The National Hockey League returns from its All-Star Break on Tuesday night, and the Detroit Red Wings will hit the ice with the league’s best record at 37-10-4. And while the Red Wings trailed the Ottawa Senators on the BetUS Stanley Cup odds list when we last looked before Christmas, those doing any NHL betting this week will notice that Nicklas Lidstrom and company have now overtaken Daniel Alfredsson’s club on the list.
The Red Wings were listed at +400 odds to win the Stanley Cup back on December 24, but they’re now pegged as the +325 favorites to be the champions this season. The Senators, on the other hand, have remained steady at +350 odds. Ottawa blasted Tampa Bay 8-4 in their last game before the All-Star Break, but overall they’ve lost five of their past seven contests to sit just six points up on the Canadiens for first in the East.
Montreal has won seven of their past 10 games, but they’ve still managed to fall from +2500 to +3000 Stanley Cup odds over the past month. The Habs, though, aren’t alone in that fall – 15 other teams have worse Cup odds now than they did back in December.
Headlining that list are the New York Rangers, who had been pegged at +1000 championship odds but are now sitting at just +1800. New York went just 4-4-2 over their last 10 contests before the All-Star Break, and they’re now tied with the rival New York Islanders for last place in the Atlantic Division and eighth place in the conference.
The Islanders’ odds have fallen as well, from +5000 to +6000, as they too struggle to get a foothold in the Eastern playoff picture. Other Eastern teams with falling odds include the Toronto Maple Leafs (from +4000 to +6000), the Tampa Bay Lightning (from +3500 to +7000), the Carolina Hurricanes (from +1400 to +2000), the Boston Bruins (from +4000 to +5000), and the Philadelphia Flyers (from a low +1600 to just +2000).
That leaves eight Western Conference teams with worse Stanley Cup odds right now, including the injury-ravaged Colorado Avalanche who have fallen from +2000 to +2500. The Avs should have forward Paul Stastny back in lineup soon (without his appendix), but forwards Joe Sakic and Ryan Smyth will both be out of action for quite a bit longer.
The Chicago Blackhawks surged to +5000 Cup odds on the basis of a decent start to the season, but poor play of late has dropped that line to +8000. Other West teams with falling title odds include the Nashville Predators (from +5000 to +6000), the San Jose Sharks (from +1100 to +1200), the Minnesota Wild (from +1600 to +2000), the Columbus Blue Jackets (from +5000 to +6000), and the Edmonton Oilers (from +10000 to +12500). As well, the Los Angeles Kings have plummeted from +15000 to +25000.
Besides the Senators, four other teams have stayed steady on the Stanley Cup odds list over the past month – the New Jersey Devils (+1400), Dallas Stars (+2500), Florida Panthers (+6000), and St. Louis Blues (+4000). New Jersey and Dallas are both currently in the Top 8 of their conferences, while Florida and St. Louis are sitting below.
The Red Wings have shown a slight improvement on their Cup odds, but the biggest gainers have been the Phoenix Coyotes. Wayne Gretzky’s team won six of their last 10 games prior to the All-Star Break, and they enter the second half of the season just two points back of the Avs for eighth place in the Western Conference. The Coyotes were at longshot +20000 odds a month ago, but that line has shot up to just +6000 for this week.
The Washington Capitals have also seen a big improvement in their odds – from +12500 to +8000. Washington is 7-3-0 over their past 10 games, and they’re now only one point behind the Hurricanes for top spot in the Southeast Division. Another Southeast team, the Atlanta Thrashers, has seen an improvement from +5000 to +4000.
That leaves five other teams that have better Cup odds now than they did in late 2007. The Pittsburgh Penguins have gone from +1800 to +1200, although the loss of Sidney Crosby for two months will hurt. The Vancouver Canucks went from +1800 to +1400, the Buffalo Sabres from +3000 to +2500, and the Calgary Flames from +3000 to +1800.
And the defending champion Anaheim Ducks have improved from +1000 to +800 Stanley Cup odds over the past month, with defenseman Scott Niedermayer back in the lineup. The Ducks entered the break at 27-20-6, a single point back of the Sharks and Stars in the Pacific Division.
